| reply to nwrickert I think I'm beginning to like this. I've had one email in my bulk mailbox all day so far, and just the two I already mentioned that found their way into my inbox.
And I have been getting normal email, so if you see any typos in this, it's because I'm typing with my fingers crossed |

And, messages that I have been marking as not spam are still showing up...still in the spam folder but not dumped like I feared.
Guess I will pull the solution out from my appeal to Yahoo! and try the steps again to see if they work.

| reply to nwrickert I think there is an ebb and flow to it. Kind of like the anti-submarine war in the Atlantic in WWII. For a while the spammers get the upper hand and we all get 100 a day. Then the filters and anti-spam operations figure something out and we get much less. Eventually the spammers figure out a work-around the cycle begins again. -- Illegitimati non carborundum

| I'm in the NorthEast and posted a message at the AT&T group there because I was wondering what happened to all my junk mail. My e-mail address is .snet if that helps any of you who are wondering who's doing the filtering. I use to get around 200 spam mail a day and this week I've probably haven't even reached 100 total. So far today I've gotten 15 spams and I love it but I too am worried that some non spam may not be coming through. There's usually at least one non spam in my junk folder every day and I always say not to mark it as spam, however the server doesn't always listen to me. Sheryl |

| reply to nwrickert Well, bad news: Today I discovered that some "real" email is also being blocked. I am NOT happy. My new web hosting company sent me 3 emails, two from sales, which I got, and one from support containing critical information to enable me to set up my site, and that one I did NOT receive.
Support literally had to send it to a sales rep who then had to forward it to me. The blocked address contains "support@" Had I not been told to expect it, I would not have known of the problem.
The support group didn't even get an error message. This is NOT good! |

You might want to post about it in the ATT Direct forum, to see if they can provide any information. |

| Okay, I'll do it if you think it will help. I talked to Tier 2 and got some links for the support folks to use to get themselves unblocked. Hopefully that will work in this instance, but maybe the Direct guys can do something for everyone because I'm guessing we could all be affected.
I'll post it over there shortly. |

3 edits | reply to Lizz There are a few alternative ways for the person who uses an email client to help the problem of some received ATT-Yahoo emails getting treated as spam, and being left only on the web mail site.
1. SpamGuard is on by default. Check the "Bulk" folder on web mail interface every 29 days or less. If you find wanted email there, add the address to your web mail address book.
2. If you use a real email program, set SpamGard to put all emails into the inbox, but to mark suspected spam by modifying the subject with a "[BULK] prefix. That Subject could be used as a factor in your email program's junk filtering.
3. Use AddressGuard for your SBC Yahoo email. In this system you can give different addresses to different people or groups. You can also opt to turn off spam filtering, or not, for each AddressGuard address. The emails come in to your regular mailbox, but the To field will contain the address the sender used. If the address you gave your sister starts getting spam, delete that address and give your sister the new email address that you make for her to use. You can have a different email address to use for rebates or mailing lists. You can have over a hundred such addresses. If you want more info on AddressGuard, say so.
The downside is that these are @yahoo.com addresses. Ideally, you would only give out the spam guard addresses. It is probably a bit late for that with your existing address, which will continue to work if you don't change it. But you could let the filtering continue on those addresses, and set up AddressGuard addresses that bypass filtering. This is all based on my current understanding and I could be mistaken on some portion. I do use several AddressGuard addresses without problem.
One more thing: the address that you give you domain registrar gets put into a publicly accessible database that is mined for spam. That would be a good use for an AddressGuard address. When spam becomes heavy to that address, create a new AddressGuard address, change the data with the registrar, and turn off the old address. |

| No way would I ever think of waiting 29 days to check my bulk folder. There would have been 1,000+ spam messages and probably 20 or so non-spam emails. I have always checked the bulk folder each and EVERY time I checked for "real" email!!
It would have been nice if my "missing support email" had even made it to my bulk folder. It got blocked long before that. I can deal with spam; I canNOT deal with not receiving critical email.
I've reported the details to the "good guys" in the Direct forum as requested. |

| I am still getting some spam.
I just checked this morning, and there was one spam message in my bulk folder. Previously, I would have expected 70 or more.
Let me be a bit clearer here. I am not complaining about the lack of spam. If spam would magically go away, that would be great.
What bothers me, is that there has been a big change somewhere. Whereas spam used to show up in my bulk folder, most of it no longer shows up at all. Since this is not happening to mail I received elsewhere, I have to conclude that there has been a change at either AT&T or Yahoo.
Why have we not been told about this change?
It seems that we are being given the mushroom treatment - keep them in the dark, and feed them horse manure.
At the very least, we are owed a full explanation of what has changed, why it has changed, and whether we can do anything about it to ensure that important email still gets through. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.12 |

| What would that change be?
I'd be surprised if there was a change - I've seen this before.
This morning I had three in my junk mail folder whereas in the very recent past I'd have forty every morning. I just think the filters have been tweaked and are working better. Of course the filters often catch real mail too - that's why I NEVER set them to just delete.
At some point in the next few weeks the spammers - remember, according to the experts, there are only a few hundred major spammers out there in the world - they'll figure out what the filters are doing and it'll get back to "normal" and we'll all have hundreds per day again.
So - if you are worried about not getting "real" mail, just set the filter to not delete and check your spam folder. This is SOP all the time anyhow. Everyone knows that sometimes the filters get a bit over-enthusiastic and that real mail sometimes ends up there. Anyone who doesn't check his/her junk mail or spam folder before deleting the contents hasn't been paying attention for the past seven or eight years.
Yes - it's a pain in the ass, but so are a lot of little things we can't do anything about.
Are you thinking that because there isn't muchin your spam folder that real mail is lost somewhere? -- Illegitimati non carborundum

| What would that change be? Obviously, either AT&T or Yahoo has started massively blocking spam.
I'd be surprised if there was a change - I've seen this before. That there has been a major change is obvious, even if you are in denial.
I just think the filters have been tweaked and are working better. A change from 40 spam to 3 spam is obviously a major change.
Of course the filters often catch real mail too - that's why I NEVER set them to just delete. But it is not your filters. It is either AT&T filters or Yahoo filters (will somebody please 'fess up, and tell us whose filters), and those filters are set to delete. So now you have lost all control, and have no ability to deal with real mail that is caught in the filters. You don't even know whether to complain to AT&T or to Yahoo.
So - if you are worried about not getting "real" mail, just set the filter to not delete and check your spam folder. There isn't any filter I can set. These are not appearing in my spam box. If any real mail is being blocked, then there is no way I know of to find out about that.
To repeat:
A major change in mail handling has been made somewhere. We have not been informed about this change. We do not know whether the change was made by AT&T or by Yahoo. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; SuSE 10.1; firefox 2.0.0.12 |
