Strange/wonderful speed issue

Hi I have been a TekSavvy subscriber for 7 months now, and the service is wonderful.

However, in the past 3 months, I have run into a strange 'error' three times (Jan 1 - 2, ~Feb 1, and today March 19th).

Please forgive me for the limited information / poor description.

My typical speedtest results are about 3500/600 kbps.
Right now my speedtest results are 6602/924 kbps.

Also, my CPU is running full speed, making my computer largely unusable. The process causing the high usage of my CPU is "HPTLBXFX.exe", HP's multifunction printer software. If I end this process or restart, my internet connection speeds return to normal, and I spend ~2 hours reinstalling my printer & drivers.

My question to you is:

How can HPTLBXFX.exe increase my internet connection speed?
(I just ran speedtest (Speakeasy's speedtest) again, and I recorded 7387/847 kbps)

Note: I am using the Speedtouch 708 WL in bridge mode to a WRT54GL v1.1 using Tomato firmware.

the speeds look like you're on the 7/1 profile bell offers with their total internet.

i have no idea how it is possible that some random hp process is causing it. sounds like a big coincidence...

This is a well documented HP Bug.

I believe they fixed this back in 2007. Are you sure you are using current software?

Anyhow this is is an HP issue, not a teksavvy issue.

Thank you for your recommendation. I have reinstalled the 'latest' (from HP's site) HP drivers the previous two times this has occurred. (I think it has to do with me leaving my HP 3050 on all the time, and not the drivers themselves)

However, why does my internet speed practically double when this happens. And, how can I make this permanent?

@mc.videotron.ca

I have to agree with the other person.. coincidence or a bug giving bogus results.

Check your modem stats, Does it show 7-meg? If it does (and someone screwed up), then you should get the best speeds with no 100% CPU utilization.

the 100% CPU utilization is something you don't want and is an HP bug. If you can't fix it and it always re-occurs, then Email HP for a fix.

Don't know else to say about it... But check your modem stats and let us know what the sync rates are.

Does your speed actually increase? I'm guessing that it doesn't, the speedtest might just be calculating an incorrect number.

Try downloading a file from microsoft.com when the speedtest claims you're getting 6000Kbps+. Based on your normal speedtest speeds, you're probably on a 4Mbps profile, and your download speed should probably be around 437KB/sec.

Well, from Microsoft the max download is 749kB/s, or the equivalent of 6000 kbps.
My normal max is ~350kB/s - 440kB/s

Also, how do I chack my line stats?

Thank you so much!

Can you send me the printer drivers? I want some speed increases too!

This program might work for checking your stats: »www.2cent.de/dmt/v7/dmt.zip I'm not sure if it supports that version of your modem or not.

Buddy, you're lucky! Bell upgraded your profile by *mistake*.

I hope you won't have a line problem anytime soon or Bell will downgrade you to the normal profile when they'll try to rectify it.

Ok, I finally was able to get my modem stats (removed my router & re-initialized my modem)

Here is a screenshot of my desktop, showing my:
Modem stats
Download Speed
Process CPU utilization

Can you please confirm the modem stats are typical?

I will terminate HPTLBXFX.exe after receiving confirmation & post a screenshot, redownloading the same file (And yes, I will clear the cache first)

(Also, please note the download speed from Microsoft fluctuated between 800 - 650kB/s)

I've noticed over the decades nothing Hewlett Packard makes works. It's amazing the money these corporations throw away on products that don't work instead of switching to a brands like Cannon or Panasonic that do work. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been frittered away on junk, money that could've been used elsewhere by all these companies. Another reason for the low profitability in the corporate world in Canada.

you're definitely on a 5meg profile. don't trust firefox download speed. in taskmanager click to the networking tab. then view... select columns. then click bytes received per interval. that will be your network adaptors actual download speed in bytes. i'm on the 3meg profile so mine shows 331,xxx in that spot. i'm not sure what yours will be but it should be 5xx,xxx.

Thanks for telling me that! Unfortunately, I already terminated the process, and dropped back to normal speeds. (The task master bytes per interval is 558,xxx)

Note the download rate displayed by Firefox remained very steady for the entire download, unlike the 650 - 800 kB/s with the problem.

Also, it should be noted uTorrent, and the speakeasy.net speed test were also ~1 - 2 megs above my profile.

Oh well, I will just wait another month and see if it happens again!

Thank you all for your help!

I had a similar situation happen to me when I was running Kaspersky Internet Security. It seemed that whenever Kaspersky was running, my speedtest results hit the 600-700 KB/sec range (normally I get ~4200 KB/sec). Whenever I would disable Kaspersky, the speedtest results would drop back down to "normal" and to what my profile is set at (5056/800).

This also happened to my friend's PC when he too ran Kaspersky. I since removed Kaspersky and went to Eset NOD32 (which I like better btw) and my speeds have been stable since.

Now, I dont believe my speeds were in reality increased...I just think that Kaspersky was causing something that gave false results for speedtest sites, as well as http downloading from sites like Microsoft for example. I highly doubt your speeds are actually that high, and instead it's something that is causing false speed readings.

exactly.

btw, nod32 ftw.

Thanks for the tip.
you can also put bytes sent per interval to see upload.

in vista i've got a sidebar gadget that shows my current network up and down so i don't use task manager as much on my machine anymore but when i'm on site on other's machines i use that all the time.

it's just called network utilization.

the only issue i have with it is actually a vista issue i believe as it happens in my task manager too and regardless of what network drivers i use. i see double upload speed. it will show say 34mb/sec but really only transfer around 17mb/sec. i've done a bit of google searching (not recently) and come up with no solution.
