XP SP3 due next Monday per Channelweb source

Now that Windows Vista service pack 1 has been released, all eyes have shifted to Microsoft's plans for Windows XP service pack 3, the final package of updates for the trusty OS. And, according to at least one source, Microsoft will roll out XP SP3 next Monday.
Article here.

According to "Highlights of Windows XP SP3" it looks to include IE7 & WMP11 along with other stuff.

Thanks for that link...

Verdict: Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a must-have update for IT shops seeking to extend the life of Windows XP.

Not things, they are features.
Does the current MS EULA still permit end user choice?

Windows XP SP3 will not install WMP11 or IE7. Microsoft themselves verify this in this paper: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en

said by »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···ylang=en :

Microsoft is not adding significant functionality from newer versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista, to
Windows XP through XP SP3. For instance, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7,
although Windows XP SP3 does include updates to both Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7, and it
will update whichever version is installed on the computer.

That piece of news ought to keep the cry babies happy, maybe. Personally I prefer they include all the updates to XP as shipped but I'll be happy just to get SP3.

I will run it when it comes and am happy that it doesn't include IE7. When and if I decide to run that, I will, but for now, I am happy with IE6. As to the rest of SP3, I see nothing to shout about but nothing not to download either.

You are correct. Thank you for the correction.
The information presented in the article that I linked appears to be incomplete.

You're free to not install it, and run any programs on your system as you see fit, as long as they don't attempt to reveal Microsoft's trade secret(s).

I personally prefer the latest versions of such important Windows components. IE7 is much leaner than IE6 actually, as Microsoft made IE more componentized and less integrated into the OS for security reasons. Similar with WMP, but for antitrust reasons with the EU.

Also, I like having the most secure version of IE and WMP too.

You think Microsoft will roll out XP SP3 on Easter Monday? I don't think so.

It's not a holiday here so I see no reason that they wouldn't. Some companies give Good Friday off as a holiday but others don't.

Just last week I install the last RC of SP3 on a test computer.........it did absolutely nothing for me......no warm fuzzy feeling....just a strange chill down my spine..........and it did even less for the computer it was installed on........afterwards did a total and utterly complete re-format of the computer.

As for IE7 and WMP 11......if a person wanted that they could have installed it months ago so it would seem pointless to include those in SP3.

Anyone with a fully updated computer would gain very little from SP3. An perhaps gain a few un-wanted items.

Are you aware that SP stands for Service Pack??

It's not supposed to give you chills, rub your willie, or do anything of the sort. It's a collection of fixes, updates, patches, and other stuff like that, just like SP3 and SP4 were for Windows 2000.

Finally!

Now, when I rebuild the ten or so computers I do each week, I'll be able to drop in a CD and install 300Mb of fixes instead of having to wait for them to download. Very nice.

It would be even better if i could just reinstall the OS and then put SP3 on (if SP2 and SP1 are already included) and have an up to date system. We'll see.....

Based on this, SP1 or SP2 isn't required, and will save a boatload of Winupdates and prereq SP installs
