I've not seen a great deal that is added that you would call noticable. I believe it was about 66 MB download on a fully updated machine, but there isn't any Vista look, which a few were suggesting.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has responded to numerous complaints about its new service pack for Windows Vista with an offer of free support for anyone having trouble installing or running the update.
According to Microsoft's support Web site, the company is offering no-charge Vista SP1 help for all users via e-mail and online chat. The wait time for an online chat session as of mid-afternoon Monday was about 20 minutes, according to the site.

Microsoft is also offering free Vista SP1 support via telephone for customers of its Software Assurance, TechNet, MSDN, and partner programs.

The cost-benefit of migrating to Vista would have difficult to justify. I could see the Linux desktop getting a fresh boost as vendors rushed to develop a SMB/Enterprise desktop configuration that would be easy to administer.

My gut feeling is that Microsoft had less emphasis on developing Vista for efficiency and performance, and more on "enhancing user experience" with whirlygigs and widgets.

I also suspect they used application module writing tools and lots of copied modules that mean more lines of less efficient code.

As a result, they came up an OS that requires far more resources than anything else on the market, and are now having to rethink their strategy.

You have to love commercialism and how the figures get twisted. All the main stream shops are not selling machines with XP on now, and it seems they are forcing any PC makers no options after June 30

In a decision that highlights Windows Vista's hefty system requirements, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) said Thursday that it would allow computer makers to continue to sell the older Windows XP operating system on "ultra low-cost PCs" for an extended period.
Microsoft said it would allow system vendors to preload the Home edition of Windows XP on ULCPCs through June 2010, or one year after the next version of Windows becomes generally available.

Microsoft defines ULCPCs as, among other things, systems that use discount-line processors and lack a separate graphics card. An example of such as system is the Asus Eee PC, which runs Windows XP or Linux and sells for less than $400.

Most, if not all updates and patches I already have backed up on external disk or slipstreamed...so its not a problem for me at all. Usually in a month's time I re-format anywhere from 5-10 computers.

Just last week I install the last RC of SP3 on a test computer.........it did absolutely nothing for me......no warm fuzzy feeling....just a strange chill down my spine..........and it did even less for the computer it was installed on........afterwards did a total and utterly complete re-format of the computer.

As for IE7 and WMP 11......if a person wanted that they could have installed it months ago so it would seem pointless to include those in SP3.

Anyone with a fully updated computer would gain very little from SP3. An perhaps gain a few un-wanted items.

I personally prefer the latest versions of such important Windows components. IE7 is much leaner than IE6 actually, as Microsoft made IE more componentized and less integrated into the OS for security reasons. Similar with WMP, but for antitrust reasons with the EU.

Also, I like having the most secure version of IE and WMP too.
