Icon : Your line stats are the numbers that tell how healthy a connection you have between your modem and the DSLAM in the CTel local office that you work out of. It tells the speeds the modem is trained up at, the signal strength measured in decibels in the form of a noise margin, and a few other things that can help determine if there is a local problem or not. You may check out this FAQ that will give you some useful reading on the subject.

If you have a Westell branded modem, make sure it is connected directly to your computer (no other routers or switches between modem and computer), and in a web browser enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.

The page that displays first is the home page inside the modem's configuration area. Move your mouse over the "Troubleshooting" tab across the top, then select "DSL Transceiver" from the list. The page will display something like the following:

Transceiver Revision: 5.2.2.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 320
Margin (dB) 26.5 31.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 21.5 12.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 13.1 12.1

You can simply copy and paste it into a reply if you'd like. Glad to hear you're at least running well tonight.

I'm very much a novice at this... so any help would be gretly appreciated.
They did boost my service today. Tonight my speed is 1200 and 256 Quite an improvement!
anon : A Centurytel Tech was here this morning and installed a new Westell modem for me. I had a NeTopia one that I'd bought from them 3 yrs ago. He says my problem is the card in their office. He said he believes it was malfunctioning before they put it in and no one noticed (in spite of my complaints and questions)... so 33 months later it is finally going to be replaced.

He also said that he boosted my download speed to 320 for the weekend but it will be 1500 as of Monday. I just tested and it's 190. :(

Since they promised me via email that they would base any refund on the tech report, he said I should be getting some kind of credit for the past 33 months. Time will tell I guess. I'm just really frustrated. WHY do they gt by with this crap? I work online so my DSL speed is a serious matter. It's my bread and butter and they've been holding out on me. If you bought a gallon of milk and they kept bringing you a quart you'd surely say plenty! This is the same deal... just want what I'm paying for.

anon : I've been with Centurytel for over 3 yrs... have had the 1.5 DSL for nearly that long and have tried to tell them multiple times how slow my connection is. Have gotten one lame excuse after another, suggesting I'm just too impatient and dense to know how this stuff really works.
So yesterday I was testing for a job and in the process they also tested my computer (which was fine) and my DSL speed which failed miserably. Because of the low speed I didn't get the job. Now I have to get my DSL up to speed and start the whole process over again.
My download speed last night was 230 when they tested it... today it's 183. My upload last night was 130... that's gone down today as well.

Considering I've been paying for 1500 and am getting roughly 1/7 of that, I think Centurytel owes me a refund. Considering how simple it is to test these things there's no excuse for them not doing it during every new installation so they KNOW what we ordered is what we're getting. I've suggested to them that a refund is in order so now we'll see just what kind of customer service they truly do provide.
