I'm not entirely sure why x264 is such a good encoding codec.. or why the hell you can encode an hddvd or bluray to fit on a dvd9 and the quality is still good. But ripping bluray to back it up to bluray isn't that popular, ripping bluray and encoding it to x264 is a little more feasible.
