Hey all,
I'm in Chatham. I'm currently subscribed to digital cable, using the 6412 receiver. Would someone explain to me why I'm receiving HD channels(mostly the Detroit feeds)in the 720's? I thought you had to pay extra for HD channels, or is this another one of Cogeco's "sucker" promotions? |

| reply to hdtvguy said by hdtvguy :And you forgot the those so important WestCoast HD channels so I have a backup to record the programs that my box froze on me for recordings in the 200's and 700's. At last count 10 recorded programs with frozen video in just the last two weeks. The Cogeco tech didn't find anything wrong with the box and had no idea why all the freezes occur during commercials and not during program content. I would have blamed this on my poor internet performance( I pray they haven't done the node split yet!!) but my understanding is the TV signal is a different carrier than my internet. You get timeshifted HD? My grandfather on Geneva Street most certainly does NOT get anything but the 12 I just mentioned.
Then again, St. Catharines is a bit of a hybrid right now. Some have digital duplication and more HD channels than others. -- I swear that I will faithfully and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. |

| reply to Snickerdo said by Snickerdo :said by Marcer :Totaling 31 possible HD Channels (depending on what you subscribe to) (All these are available in Windsor) In Niagara we get 12 HD channels, total. This includes the networks, the premiums, the movie channels, etc. It's pathetic, and something Cogeco should be ashamed of. 31 is also pathetic compared to what Rogers offers in all their markets. Simply put, Cogeco is a decent internet provider, but they are a horrendous television provider that is 1-2 years behind everyone else. | reply to wallee said by wallee :Yup. I get most of the music channels and a bunch of the analogue stations. In some instances two or three times. I think I get fox twice and I have five or six channels the show the sports net logo.I was getting HD Net, Disc HD, National Geographic HD and one of the sports HD channels with no audio. I no longer get NG but I still get all the others but with no audio. They are mostly concentrated in the 80's and 90's but go as low as 54-XXX and as high as 102-XXX You must live in an area of the city that has analog duplicated on digital. | reply to freakyfan If I understand things correctly, once an area has been upgraded and has the ability to receive all available HD channels we may still be S.O.L.
Some, if not most, of the "extra" HD channels will only be available if you already pay for the digital select package that has the SD version of the HD channel. So we get to fork out more money for a bunch of stuff we don't won't to get a couple of things we do want. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I hope I am.

This is the main reason why we will be going Satellite when we move back to St. Catharines. The HD line-up is just pathetic. I'm with freakyfan. I rarely venture outside of the HD channels. -- ----gg's and happy gaming---- |

| reply to freakyfan Cogeco lists a ton of HD channels on their site but its false advertising as it seems all the areas have a pathetic HD selection. Yes there is fine print, I know that. It still doesn't change the fact that it's misleading.
I am in St. Catharines and the channel selection is awful. There only singular reason that I am not using satellite is because my apartment faces the wrong way and I have no choice. I've had the HD service for nearly 2 years and they haven't added a single new channel in that whole time - it seems like they don't care and they want to live in the analogue world forever. It's 2008 for pete's sake... why are all the standard channels still analogue? They'd at least be watchable if they were digital @ standard defintion. And what's with charging the $6.99 or whatever it is for 2 "premium channels" - Discovery HD and HDNet. I can't live without discovery HD so I am forced to pay this. It feels like a rip off.
My family back in kitchener has Rogers cable and the HD selection is sooo much better. There is literally about 4 or 5 times more HD channels.
Sorry for ranting... |

| reply to Snickerdo said by Snickerdo :said by nitzguy :push out some DCT700s Niagara doesn't even have the analog channels remapped onto digital, so DCT700s are useless here. It'd take probably oh...I dunno...6, maybe the capacity of 8 analogue channels to duplicate a 70 channel lineup in any area. That's what I meant, dump the tiers...you gain back those 30 channels, duplicate them on digital...and you're left even at that point with lets say 24 6Mhz channels...2 HD channels per frequency...you have 48...even as a worst case scenario.
But again, does Cogeco have the stomach for it? They have deep pockets now...the question is do they upset the apple cart...or use the Deep Pockets to buy more cable systems out?
MrShag: Its just not possible to do what you are suggesting. Since those without HD boxes wouldn't be able to watch, the technology just doesn't allow for what you are looking for unfortunately.
Same reason why Non-HD boxes can see the HD channels in the lineup, but obviously cannot see (can sometimes hear) them . |
