1 edit | [Services] Losing Internet Constantly
Recently, the internet keeps dying. Previously, I set my modem to bridged because I am behind a router (Linksys BEFSR41) and I would get a Bellsouth IP, but when I recently checked my modem configuration, I noticed that all the settings were back to default. I again changed my settings back to a bridged connection and I am able to get online, but I disconnect every once in a while. It makes it difficult to download files or play games. Also, when I restart my router, I can almost always instantly get online. Also I have DSL ultra at 1.5Mbps/256k and when I test the connection I usually get around what I'm supposed to get.
I've attached my log below

| I have a Westell 6100. When the connection drops, my router still shows that it is connected and once I restart the router, everything is fine again. I am still online and my modem displays all the normal colors, but I have to restart my router.
If i directly connect to the modem directly right after a disconnect, I have to take it out of bridged mode, which restarts my modem, which has a stable connection again. | | jeno
@bellsouth.net | Do you have the router set to "keep alive"? If not, try that... | | anonyjane

| reply to Gogetacow Make sure when you bridge the modem you are going through the GUI (surfing to 192.168.1.254) and NOT the hard reset method (holding in the reset button). When the modem is correctly bridged, the internet light should be off. Set the router to pppoe and make sure the keep alive option is selected, with a redial period of 30 seconds. | | Pashune Inhaling at 675 KB per sec. Premium join:2006-04-14 Gautier, MS

| The OP's real problem is completely irrelevant to any settings on his modem or router.
It is a physical issue with the phone line itself.
You'll need to test at the NID to see if the problem lies within your home or beyond it in Bellsouth's infrastructure.
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How to check modem stats, synch rates & speeds from test jack at the NID.
My recommendation, if possible, is to let the line run until (and if it disconnects). Go for a few hours..perhaps? -- I have achieved 3 meg , fastpath sync on a 15,700 ft. 26 ga copper line. =] | | Airwolf7 Premium join:2004-12-12 Franklin, KY

| reply to Gogetacow Pashune is right. Your downstream Signal to Noise Margin is flopping around all over the place and you need to isolate the problem by testing at the Test Jack at your NID or INI.
Your setup is never going to run right until you repair or have repaired whatever is causing your SN Margin to be unstable.
Testing at the Test Jack will allow you to determine who is responsible for making the repairs.
If everything runs great at the Test Jack then you have an inside problem and you are responsible for repairing it.
If everything still runs bad at the Test Jack then it is their problem and they are responsible for repairing it.
You also could have a bad modem and one way to test that is to swap it with someone that has a good stable line and modem, if your modem runs great on their line and their modem runs crappy on your line then your modem most likely is not bad. | |
