reply to Irish Shark

Re: [Info] Hi Irish Shark

Hi again Irish Shark, actually the next package available with Atlantic Broadband jumps to 3MB. So I'm going to go ahead with that because I do enjoy watching the videos online and hate that stopping, starting all the time. I buffered the WMP program 25 sec, but that really didn't help and I guess I assumed with my new laptop, having a faster processor would make a difference, but it didn't. So that was why I kind of thought maybe it was the internet speed we have.

Thanks again IS.........and Happy Easter to you!

Don't get your hopes up too much though. Video on the internet even with higher speeds is subject to pausing. It will be better with more speed but I have a solid 20mb down speed and the performance is still sometimes stop and go. It has to do with how optimistic the buffering is on the server side. It sends data to you and how fast you respond is how it calculates how much it needs to send you before you can start watching it without pauses but it isn't perfect. The more it buffers the longer the initial delay to have the video start but usually the smoother the experience.

Also, obviously server performance is a factor as well as the latency (network delay) between you and the server.

so IOW, when you say 'the more it buffers, the longer the initial delay...', are you referring at all to the buffer I setup in the player itself? Because right now I have mine setup to buffer 25 sec

There is lots of different video solutions. For some, you don't pick the player.

Most are set to buffer what it feels will provide enough cushion to play non stop.

The more the buffer, theoretically the smoother the playback. If you do it manually, you need to find the right value based on your connection. If there is an option for the player to determine it, try that and see if things improve.
