Verizon Online to Trial New Web Search Service to Reduce Error Messages from Mistyped Queries and Help Customers Quickly Reach their Desired Destination
On June 11, 2007, Verizon Online will begin the trial of a new Advanced Web Search service designed to reduce the amount of dead-end, "no file exists" or similar error messages you see and to help you quickly find the destination web site you were seeking. If you type a nonexistent or unavailable URL (e.g., www.verizon.cmo), or enter a search term, into your browser address bar, Verizon may present you with an Advanced Web Search page containing suggested links based upon the query you entered. The Advanced Web Search page would be presented instead of your receiving an NXDOMAIN or similar error message. The Verizon Advanced Web Search page may impact applications that rely on an NXDOMAIN or similar error message and may override similar browser-based search results pages. If you would prefer not to receive Advanced Web Search pages from Verizon, you should follow the opt-out instructions that are available by clicking on the "About the Search Results Page" link on any Advanced Web Search page.
The technical trial will be implemented in the Midwest portion of the U.S. - primarily in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. No software will be loaded onto your computer to enable the provision of Advanced Web Search pages, nor will Verizon collect any personally identifiable information in connection with the provision of the Advanced Web Search service.

| I think it was Network Solutions Verisign correction per Curiosity  - thanks! who tried that crap a few years back. It screwed up some large corporate IT applications and they backed off.
To return to normal, try changing DNS settings from "automatically detect" to some other trusted provider's DNS.
See »www.dnsserverlist.org/ for a list of major ISP and root DNS addresses.
Of course you could open a ticket with VZW and tell them that you have filtering and security applications that need the industry error messages to run properly.

that is exactly what is happening to mine, I am on verizon fios in Texas and every one of my computers now go to that verizon search. I did not know the opt-out was available but do see that option now.
If I opt out of this will it go to some other search? I think it used to go to google before the verison stuff started??
The problem is the verizon search rarely ever pulls up the correct item and I mean really simple searches which is frustrating. |

| I am on Verizon DSL and my seach has never changed so I'm not sure about FiOS. The only time the Verizon page comes up for me is if I type a web page wrong like werizon.com or something like that. Then it hits the Verizon stuff and tries to point me in the right direction. When I do normal searches it still goes to my default search page...
