I really hope you can help me out, and point which part to use and which not to use, also please suggest parts that you think are better (performance/silent wise) than the ones i have listed (my knowledge is fairly limited, so your help will be greatly appreciated)...did i mentioned i have never built pc before

I hope i didn't forget to list any major component, and i will be leveraging my old SONY double layer DVD writer, its old but don't need anything fancier that the one i have

Just as a comparison, right now i have an old, very old P4 HT @ 3.00 with 2 gigs RAM and hmmm very old Geforce FX 5200, its an Dell Dimension 4600, i guess no need for further info you get the picture Its a collector`s issue...

Thank You,

maybe I can help :)

I don't know if I can be of help ... I built myself a very nice PC (see a few threads back - I even have pictures).

To watch DVD's you don't need a powerful PC. Sticking in a Quad or even Duo will make your PC hotter, thus you'll need fast fans, and thus it will be not as quiet as you might like.

If you exclude gaming from your repertoire - you can have a very nice quiet (nearly silent) PC that is the size of three calculus books stacked together

»Need a nice Mini-ITX case :)

I'm very satisfied with the results I got (and unlike the picture shows - I used the power supply that came with the PC.

The entire cost was maybe $400 (INCLUDING MONITOR)

$80 Mobo+CPU (yay for onboard video)
$30 1GB RAM
$50 Case+PowerSupply
$30 DVD+/-RW DL (nearly silent)
$ 0 Hard Drive (had one lying around)
$20 Wireless card
$200 Monitor ...

Since you want a video card - get yourself a nice PCI card for $50 with passive cooling - and problem solved

Remember - there is a trade-off between speed and silence ... more of one - less of the other (unless you've got money to throw away - for a water cooling solution - which will just be more headaches than it's worth) ...

again: no games = all good

it's a quiet forum

... and could you repeat that out loud without laughing: "4 GB of ram for WORD PROCESSING" !?

get serious - you don't need 4GB ... install XP SP3 and you're good for 3 years ... or how about spend $600 now ... and in 2 years for $600 (that you save now) you'll be able to get a SUPER-RIG (by then we'll have non-moving active cooling)

THANKS for the reply YBoris

i`ll certainly consider it

i need the 4 gigs cause i wanna run 64 bit xp pro and it will help me when i datamine some database/s. The databases i am working are over 2GB each.

but i think you are right it might be an overkill

thanks again
