I think you are confusing Collision based Ethernet with Cable TV.
Cable TV as with over-the-air TV uses 6 MHz channels (in US). When the Cable system was modified to support high-speed Internet access digital modulation techniques were developed that allows each 6 MHz channel to deliver about 42 Mbps of data. Currently only one channel per node is used but the newest DOCSIS version allows multiple channels be bonded for higher speed.
Upload was a problem since except for limited SCADA telemetry data cable systems had no need to transmit data back to the head-end. In fact some early cable systems used dial-up modems to send data back to the head end. Modern systems allow customer data be sent back the the head-end. Customer data is transmitted at lower frequency then used by TV channels. Limited speed of transmit channel is why Cable Operators are so aggressive prohibiting so-called bandwidth hogs.
