When does new Norton Subscription "start"?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I have searched the Norton site and this one and don't seem to be able to find an answer. My current subscription to NIS expires in 20 days. I have bought a new one but have not activated it yet, trying to make sure I get all of the old subscription used up.

Do I have to wait or will the new subscription start when the old one expires?

I'm tired of the pop ups reminding me to purchase a new one (I understand the need to remind/advertise put an "off switch would be nice!) and would like to activate as soon as makes sense.

Thanks for the advice.

The subscription starts the day you activate that particular subscription key.
