| [Speed Issues] Charter speed test
I've run the Speakeasy speed test at: www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ to Atlanta, GA. I'm in Spartanburg, SC. I'm paying for 5 megs.
The following is a good average: Download Speed: 2814 kbps (351.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 492 kbps (61.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Charter tells me "up to 5 megs" yet 2814 kbps ain't even close to 5 megs if you do the math (1,048,576). They say even if I got 1 meg, thats still within their contractual aggrement.
Anyone got any ideas on how I can confront Charter on this issue? |

1 edit | Speed issues are tricky, it really could be anything from the mainline running through the streets, to the modem, to your own equipment. Your upload speeds are fine, its the download speeds that are off - which could be something as simple as a program running in the background on your PC thats eating your bandwidth, though it's impossible to say what the problem would be without being there to troubleshoot. The first thing I would try though would be to bypass any non-charter equipment, such as routers, switches etc. If you have easy access to another computer, I would test that one on your connection also. If you're getting the same results, then you know its probably not the PC unless they are both riddled with spyware.
Bare in mind that speedtest sites can also give inaccurate readings, as they can run through multiple non-ISP servers due to the distance from their test server to your location. Try a few different ones and see if it fluctuates. If at this point you're sure still seeing the issue, then I would call Charter and ask for a service call, just bare in mind that if the tech gets there and the problem is not related to Charter's equipment or wiring you'll probably get charged for the call.
In regards to 'confronting' Charter on the issue - unfortunatly when it comes to internet speed there are just so many different variables and possibilities with customer's PCs and equipment that are beyond the cable company's comtrol that it's impossible to guarantee that the service will run perfectly on every machine, much like with video games. ISPs throw the "up to" in there to cover their asses, basically. |

After calling Charter a half a dozen times and having someone from Charter at my house a half a dozen times, would THEY not have the capability to read this info? |

2 edits | Yes you are correct, and all the fixes/upgrades they have done just have made it not work as good.
I have had HSI for about 4 or 5 years now. It always worked great and i could max out my 3 meg connection now it is 5 meg, but for the last 4 to 6 months now i have been having slow downs.
My DU meter use to just show a straight line at the 5 meg rate any time of the day, now this is what it looks like see attached, that is from a paid news server that is able to max out a 5 meg connection with just one connection and i have 8 connections going just to get that speed. I can get the full 5 meg speed in the middle of the night.
If i did not know better i almost think it is something like packet shaping going on. I guess it is time to force a IP change and see if it gets better. |
