Newgroup Service Speed and Retention Upgrade

DSLExtreme is proud to announce that we will be enhancing our Newsgroup service that is provided FREE to our clients. Starting Tuesday, March 25, 2008 all clients will be upgraded to the following speeds:

Current Speed: Two 256k Connections
Enhanced Speed: Two 384k Connections

In addition to the increase in connection speed, we will be increasing the retention time for the service to the following:

Current Retention: 45 Days
Enhanced Retention: 75+ Days

The upgraded service will continue to have an UNLIMITED download limit. There will be no disruption of service during these upgrades and of course there will be no additional charges to your account for the enhancements.

The upgrade process will begin on the morning of March 25th and may take up to 24-48 hours to propagate to all clients. Depending on your newsgroup reader you may be required to re-subscribe to your individual newsgroups. Instructions on how to re-subscribe using Outlook Express can be found in the following knowledge base article. If you use a third party newsgroup reader please consult their help documentation for assistance.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you enjoy the enhanced service!

George,
my hat is off to you and DSLX!

Let the record show that on 8/31/2007, I made this request here,

»a request for DSLX mgmt: faster newsgroup download speed?

a little less than 7 months later, we have a FREE upgrade! Most business hate the word "free giveaway", and considering how cut-throat the ISP business is around Socal, I gotta give you guys props for giving us a boost here. Major props to DSLX. Love it!

Let's see SBC, Cox, Time Warner, Comcast provide this kind of customer service!

Re: Newgroup Service Speed and Retention Upgrade

You are very welcome! We are also working on an upgraded level of service that we will be launching in the next month or so. It will allow clients to upgrade to a faster connection speed and longer retention.

I will provide more information as we get closer to launching the premium service.

Thanks

Re: Newgroup Service Speed and Retention Upgrade

Thanks for the upgrade and the informations.

That premium service sounds like what has been asked for here a while ago. A big upgrade but as a paid service (which is ok with me and i was hoping for that). Glad to see it will get implemented.
And the free upgrade is definitely nice too.

This is no upgrade. I was shocked to find that many newsgroups are now 70% spam. Fetching headers for filtering no longer works so my Google Groups spam filter is broken. It's also painfully obvious how much better Supernews was at filtering random porn spam. What a mess!

it's sounded good at first then i found out that you can only use one DSL Account or beter i say 2 connections per ip address since i have more then one dsl extreme service and was login in to have higher speed before , so with the other provider i can have 3 accounts logged in witch gave me 2 connections x 30k or (240kb) = 60k (480kb)

60k or (480kb) x 3 accounts = 180k or (1440kb)

and now only maxed out to
2 connections x 42k or (336kb) = 84k (672kb)

so i say give me back what i had or fix it

other wise people will disconnect there other not need service from DSL extreme

I found this out too and it does suck. The newsgroup is one of the main services that DSLExtreme provided very well that other ISP couldn't touch. Now with the upgrade and the limitation of connections because of the IP address, I might have to look elsewhere but I'm not jumping to any conclusion as I think DSLExtreme is working out a solution.

But I think all they have to do is when you log on the server is to have it check the account that is logging in instead of your IP address. This wasn't an issue before the upgrade so why is it an issue now, I don't know.

The limited connection per IP is something we are aware of and are actively working with the third party news provider to have changed. They have not provided me with a specific time frame but it is something that we are actively addressing. Baring any limitations on their end it will be adjusted to be 2 connections per login without an IP limitation.

The only way I know of to get around this is via SSH tunneling if you have access to a high speed connection somewhere else. I use this method to access giganews via 4 connections from home to get very high speeds. I setup my multiwan NAT box to force a specific connection for certain ports and ssh to listen on multiple ports and then I just setup 4 SSH tunnels on the different ports and setup my usenet client to use 4 different servers. It makes it really easy to max all my connections at once.

Chugging along on 3x 6016/768k DSL Extreme DSL lines and one 3008/512 ATT DSL DIrect line for a combined total of just over 18 meg download and 2350 up. yay!

I keep having problems connecting to the newsgroup lately. It keeps saying too many connections when I use thunderbird and authentication failed on newsbinpro. Anyone else having problems in the last few days?
