The first avenue I believe would be to contact tech support explain you are having issues and would like help up grading your modems firmware to see if the upgrade would fix the issues. I would think they would could help you get the latest firmware. |

2 edits | reply to WyckedKnight I have the SB5101 and it was the replacement for my Toshiba PCX2200. I don't know if they have the SB5120 here or not. Also, I noticed the firmware is not the latest release available. Does anyone know if the new firmware will help any and how do I get Charter to push it to me as I've seen a lot of posts about having trouble getting the firmware push? |

| reply to IWLoneWolf Thank you lonewolf. I will try that ASAP. Yesterday was not so bad as I was able to pull down around 6 1/2 to 7 mb on my download at 5:30 PM. But it still erks you that you pay for something and not get it. DSL was on the money with their speeds no matter what time of day or if bad weather was in the area. Too bad you had to maintain a land line phone connection or I would have stayed with Bellsouth. |

1 edit | reply to oldhippie Well my good friend who knows much about computers networking and the internet has told me and I know from my own experience that the first person you will often talk to when calling most tech supports is often just a phone answer (this is not always the case ) and in some cases will tell you they are a tech ,but they may only be able to tell you information ,like your provisioned service speed if there are reported issues in there network or such.In some cases these may be considered level one techs. In some cases a level two tech might be able to help you , it may depend on the the isp.I just know my friend has said that he did not get some of th real issues resolved with his internet service until he talked to a level three tech , told him where the problem was stemming from .At that point the tech looked at the hop in question and admitted the it was a old node that was being overloaded. The node was upgraded and his issues with his internet went away.So he has told me that if you do not get result with many attempts with them contact your isp and ask to be transferred to a level three tech.If the first person at tech support can resolve your issues then that is great and you can consider your self very fortunate to be spared the long list of phone calls some have gone through |

| reply to IWLoneWolf said by IWLoneWolf :Contact Charter tech support explain what is happening and share your test result finds. If possible ask if you could be directed to a level Three Tech, as you really want to resolve this issue. Do not give up keep after them tell they fix it. You mean a level One Tech doesn't know if someone REALLY wants to resolve a problem? Ok, Ok. I'll give him that one. Then, exactly what power does a level Two Tech have if it takes all the way to a level Three Tech to resolve a problem?
Make SURE you request demand a credit on your bill! |

| reply to oldhippie 5Mbps package:
I've been dealing with packetloss and high pings (possibly stemming from the packetloss?) for a couple months or so, and it usually starts around the 3rd/4th hop (Charter, Qwest, WV, etc.). My modem (a PCX2200) has been reprovisioned once, but to no avail. Web browsing is pretty slow, and online games that I play are not that enjoyable because of the frequent lag spikes that I encounter. |

4 edits | reply to wildgator360 First thing I would do , is do tracert to ips that you would connect to with around 12 to 17 hops showing. check to the ips at the lows and highs and see if there is a certain hop that is showing unusually high spikes in pings when you are having slows speeds ,also look for packetloss.look to see if it shows up in the hops that are Charters or the direct backbone they are using.Do some download - upload speed tests to these to sites »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ »speedtest.chartermi.net/ and save a copy of all results.
Contact Charter tech support explain what is happening and share your test result finds. If possible ask if you could be directed to a level Three Tech ,as you really want to resolve this issue.Do not give up keep afther them tell they fix it. Hope this help you and others. |

| reply to oldhippie I seem to be in the same boat that WyckedKnight is. My speeds only drop out though around 11:00 AM until 12:30 AM the next day. A friend of mine about 5 minutes away in Greer has the same service, but no drop in speeds any time of day. How can I get a technician to fix what is broken? |

| reply to vasftw said by vasftw :"fib" to customers? haha Never once can I say that I have been told by sup to lie to a customer. Anyway, yes it unfortunate that it took so long find the issue. Replacing the modem should of been one of the first steps. Just a FYI we have millions of customer that have no issues with any of their services. People just don't take to time praise there service, so all you do hear is the bad things. And I guess American Customer Satisfaction Index (University of Michigan) and J.D. Power and Associates are wrong.
dslreports.com, where you are right now, is wrong also when they say they are the second worst rated cable ISP? »/gbu/CA
PCWorld also ranked Charter's cable Internet service as worst among 14 major Internet service providers. »www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=133019&p···oomIdx=2
The Better Business Bureau posted a warning to consumers about the company: The Better Business Bureau has received numerous complaints regarding this cable, digital TV, and high speed internet access provider. Complainants primarily allege that the firm had improper billing practices, referred customer bills to collection agencies in error, provided poor customer service, used misleading advertising, provided defective internet or cable performance, used improper sales tactics or misrepresented the actual costs of installation and service, failed to properly install or maintain service, damaged customers' property, and failed to honor service appointments.
Shall I go on? These are reputable companies that have done surveys that say Charter sucks, not just me and Joe Blow.
I have been "bundled" by Charter. I don't have a choice on cable and internet, no dish will "see" the satellite(s) at my location and DSL is not available (old section of town). If I could, I would be gone from Charter Non-Communications in a heart beat. If it was a car, I'd have traded it in.
I want Charter to succeed. I want them to do a better job for me and all their other customers. If I didn't, I wouldn't be wasting my time in here. |
