 Safety in NYC

Hey Guys!
Im travelling over to your great country and awesome city, New York in june for 5 nights, and im looking at a few different places to stay, but was wondering if there are certain places to steer clear of.
Im looking at a place on west 63rd street.
Is it easy and safe to get around at night as im on my own.?
Im also going to a Yankee night game, is it easy to get back from there? Plenty of public transport?
Thanks so much for your advice!
Cant wait to get there!
Cheers

The city has become a very safe place if you use street smarts as you would in any large city.
This weblink might come in handy for your use when using public transportation in the city.

What hotel or place are you staying in over on west 63rd?

As already mentioned, just excercise a general level of common sense as you would in any large city, especially at night. NYC is, by and large, safe. Sure, there are bad sections of the city, but you won't be visiting those.

Enjoy the Yankees game. And yes, there is plenty of public transportation. The subways are your friends!

The best tip I can offer is... just don't mosey around and *look* lost, even if you are. Get to a safe (read: populated) place and ask for directions. Other than that, you'll be fine.

I carry a small can of Reddi-Whip with me and if I get into a difficult area, I squirt a little of that stuff in my mouth and gently let it run down my cheek as I growl intermittently while walking. No one will bother you....

What was said above plus, the single most dangerous thing you could do (and should avoid) is getting intoxicated in public and then finding yourself alone (either on the subway or the street). People who are by themselves and intoxicated are major targets for being mugged. Otherwise have a great time!

See, now I suspected people still only used that stuff for other things.

Well yes there have been instances of Reddi-Whip being used for other "entertainment purposes", but the last time I did that, I was young and needed the money...

NYC is a very safe city... I think it is the safest big city in America.. Of course, there are bad sections, so be careful where you go... But most of Manhattan is quite safe... The area around Yankee stadium is generally safe when a game is taking place, but I wouldn't want to go into that area when a game isn't taking place... I'm not a Yankees fan, but out of a couple games that I have went to, I have experienced someone BREAKING into a car right in front of me and someone stealing a mailbox... The first one was a guy who wrapped a rag around his hand and punched the car window (about 15 feet from me) and the other was a group of guys with electric tools ripping a mailbox (the post office ones not a private mailbox) off a corner and throwing it in the back of a truck... Both cases were right before and right after a game walking back to a bus a few blocks away.. Never have I felt personally threatened. If you see this type of stuff just ignore it and go about your business so you don't become a statistic... I also saw cops chasing some guy in Manhattan one time and they lost him in the crowd, I saw him go into a store but I wasn't about to start chasing him.. You never know who you're messing with.

Have fun on your trip!

Oh sure... Jersey boy wants to scare the HELL out of NYC tourists! LOL Seriously... treat people the way you'd want to be treated and act like a human being. You'll be fine. I wander through what many whitebread suburban people would consider to be "bad" neighborhoods. I get treated very well, thank you. New York City is safe.

Heck, in 2000 or 2001 I was shit-faced drunk walking alone (in the wrong direction unknowingly) at 3AM someplace in the 60's...never knew if it was the East side or the West side, but I know I walked 10 blocks in the wrong direction before I realized my error. Finally got to 7th and 34th. No one messed with me, and I had plenty to drink. Stumbling drunk, and I was fine. (Truthfully, I don't even remember seeing people. God only knows how bad I looked. I had polished off many a brews with good friends.)

I'm not recommending that, just echoing the comments of how safe I feel the city is.

I think NYC is the safest city I've ever been in within the United States.. There are just "unsafe" areas, no doubting that.. Just common sense, you wouldn't want to see this guy from Australia posting here about how he got mugged because he thought it was safe to walk around a bad area.

I spend the majority of my days in Newark everyday. I've yet to feel unsafe there despite the media painting it in a bad light constantly, and the area around Yankee Stadium is fine (as long as you don't piss off the drug dealers in that old park right next to the stadium!!! Just kidding)...

Those things I was talking about REALLY did take place. I'm not even exaggerating about those things happening. The "mailbox" incident happened on a bus trip I went on with my uncle who is a Jersey City mailman... Amazing how they didn't care at all.. And that guy who broke the car window.. I didn't stick around to see what happened, but maybe he locked himself out... I don't know.. I don't know if he'd be crazy enough to try to rob something from a car with thousands of people walking around.. And I've probably been to Yankee Stadium maybe 10 times in my life...

Where's the Mailbox?
Rumor has it that the guy who took the mailbox is in hiding but through the wonders of science, we have a fix on his location

Very ghetto... Very ghetto.. But that is from 5-7 years ago and that "server" room used to get very hot (90+ plus) when the doors were closed since it was only about 11 feet by 9 feet and there were around 10 P4 and Athlon XP computers running at 100% utilization all day.. I also had a hobby internet radio station running off one of those servers with its own dedicated DSL line. The good old days.. I could keep the room at around 70 degrees by opening those little vents in the window and the fan worked good to keep the operator (me) cool when I had to sit on my ass doing something with the servers, oftentimes for hours. That is also only one of the server groups, I had another couple "blades" (computers without cases, mounted on wood) on the other side of the room!! Mainly for SETI and other distributed computing applications.

NYC, esp. Manhattan these days is safer than most "cities" in the US. Just keep your head up and if something looks sketchy, avoid.
