gave up on Yahoo SMTP server

For the last month I have been unable to send mail using the smtp.att.yahoo.com port 465 SSL server. I am constantly asked for my email password. Numerous extended calls to support, support+ have not solved the problem. My Linksys router was blamed - I replaced it with the 2wire home gateway. My Thundebird email client was blamed - I setup Apple Mail. My Mac was blamed - I borrowed a Windows computer and configured Outlook Express. All have the same problem. Configuration of all this hardware / email clients was checked remotely several times by support+. The password was changed by AT&T support and verified by them.

At the end of all this, I was given no solution or recourse for an email client. Their recommendation was to use webmail.

This is not a good result.

I cannot offer anything other than moral support.

My dad (U-verse 3.0 Mbps) is checking two sbcglobal.net accounts with Mac Mail and I was messing around with it today. I noticed a random POP error about 25% of the time on these two accounts. Never on both at the same time. Sometimes asking for a password again.

My own (DSL - 6.0 Mbps) personal sbcglobal.net account is being automatically forwarded into Gmail from ATT/Yahoo so I'd never see any errors from that.

However, I use the SMTP settings from my ATT/Yahoo account within Entourage for several other 3rd party email addresses and occasionally get an error when sending. A few days ago I had to go into ATT/Yahoo and authenticate one of them to get rid of that error (same as described in the sticky thread here).

I have dozens of customers that also have AT&T DSL accounts along with their own Domain name email addresses on Outlook and other clients. Keeping them up to date on these ATT/Yahoo changes, issues, settings, re-settings is quite annoying.

I've got two accounts' POP3 down again today. AT&T's ISP services are a joke.

Well that would certainly explain the huge number of POP3 login errors I saw on my dad's two SBCglobal accounts today.

Thanks.

This nonsense has been going on since the weekend. I've got two DSL accounts and about 10 email addresses total including the mains and subaccounts and all but one were out until Monday evening. Today I've got two subs out. And that doesn't even begin to include all of the legit mail bounced this week. The only way to describe it is "incompetent".

Since I'm auto-forwarding all my SBCglobal email into other accounts, I was wondering if your incoming mail is bouncing back to the sender because of these issues.

I'd never know if there was an issue since I'm never checking the POP server.

To test and troubleshoot over the weekend, I sent email to all of my accounts from "proper" servers (gmail and my webhost). The results were not pretty. Half disappeared and have not been seen since. More than half of the rest bounced back as undeliverable. That's less then 1/4 getting through, all from the same two accounts and servers.

They've really screwed this up.

Now that news makes me very unhappy.... since I'd never otherwise know there was a problem.

They seem to go through these fits of utter stupidity every three or four years. It's one of the reasons I don't rely on them for anything "mission critical".

At least your POP3 access works. For the past year i've been completely unable to use POP3 access with my account. A few months ago I got them to elevate the problem all the way to the engineer's working at Yahoo, but they simply told me to - 'Change my password'.

To bad I can't change my password because access to that for some weird reason is also locked.

So I said screw it and just started using my @whaleslayer.com address for everything.

I think that if my POP3 email was something I couldn't access at all for more than a few days, let alone a year, I would have eventually called the AT&T DSL Executive Office. They don't mess around... one way or another, it would have been fixed.

Ok, this is just sad...

Main account 1:
"Unable to connect to the server"
pop.att.yahoo.com

Sub account 1a:
"Unable to connect to the server"
pop.att.yahoo.com

Main account 2:
"There was a problem logging into your mail server"
"Server Response: '-ERR Server not ready. Please try again after sometime'"
pop.att.yahoo.com

And two more subaccounts not able to pull POP3 mail.

Just to add another data point, I am getting all kinds of pop errors this morning too. I too have noticed quite a reduction in email over the last week. Usually get 15-20 emails overnight, now I get two.. Checked Bulk, and nothing got routed there mistakenly. I have not tested like the Doc, but I am sure I am losing legit email just based on numbers.

Yummy... this is getting better every day.

My sbcglobal smtp service also stopped working today. Used that service for the last 5 years without any hickups and all of a sudden my mailserver can't send out any emails anymore.

I love it.

Where is the competition when you need it?

Opt out of the port 25 filter and use an outside service. That's about the only solution for business email.

I noticed some errors with 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465' in my MTA logs, just before an appointment for a CABG a couple of weeks ago. I changed over to 'smtpauth.sbcglobal.net:587' for the time being. After I feel a little more comfortable, I will try a few tests.

hey guys and gals,

With the e-mail errors and time outs you are getting can you post these in the direct forum?

Just need the following

• The ID's affected
• the errors that each id is getting, if say ID-a is getting a different error than id-b, that would be a difference.
• Does webmail work?: Note: a simple verify and yes or no will work here.
• E-mail client you are using
• DSL number if you have one or account number, for Uverse the BAN (Billing Account Number) will be it.

Then in a direct post please select [e-mail prob] and post away.

Thanks
David

I'm still waiting for someone to get around to looking at my hourly-dying DSL. Email is the least of my problems.
