 Avira Guard Default Action |
I have installed Avira Antivir Personal Edition and I can't seem to set the resident scanner's default action to quarantine infected items (see attached picture). I downloaded the EICAR test file and tried to execute it. Avira Guard caught it but if I click on "ignore" the file will be launched. Is there a way to set the resident scanner's default action to quarantine infected items? |

| The only action in the free version is Interactive. That is what you want anyway and what Avira recommends for all Antivir versions even those versions where you can choose an action other than interactive. You can choose quarantine when Guard catches it. If you choose ignore, and the file downloads, then when you go to execute it, Guard catches it again. But why would you choose ignore when Guard told you already that it is virus? The best choice would be quarantine if you are not certain it is truly a virus.
The file does not execute if you choose ignore. If using Firefox, your only choice is to download it to disk. You do that and then you try to execute it and Guard will catch it again. If you are using IE and you foolishly choose "open" (instead of saving it to disk) after telling Guard to ignore the file the first time then Guard will still catch it again. So, there is no reason for you to want to set Guard to quarantine automatically. It is always best with any AV to use interactive so you are in complete control of what happens to the file. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to CyanideDN I am assuming that the resident scanner you are talking about is AntiVir's Guard, if so like Mele mentioned it can not be changed. AntiVir's scanner can be set to Automatic Action and with that AntiVir has some pre-set options you can choose for suspicious files it finds. Find it in the Configure AntiVir option and the configuration can only be changed when logged into a account that has administrative rights. This is so, at least in XP, From the look of your screen shot it looks like you have a Vista version installed not sure if that version is any different from the XP version other than appearance.
You mentioned that when you choose "ignore" that the file launches, that is normal. Selecting ignore is instructing AntiVir to move on. |
