[Pricing] Dedicated Modem

I have been reading various posts on this board regarding the use of a phone as a dedicated modem in addition to the current two lines we have on our service. If I have a correct understanding, it is possible to use a third phone without paying the additional $10 line charge.

My desire is to upgrade my contract to include a Palm smartphone and second regular line. Because I am constantly connected to the internet, I need a dedicated line. Each additional line on the smart choice pack is $20. To add the line and internet would be $45. I have spoken with Alltel customer service and one of the store service represetnatives. Both have told me that I cannot use a phone as a dedicated modem without phone connectivity. What are the experiences of the people on this board? Thanks for your help!

They are telling you correct information. There was some incorrect information out about not having to pay for the phone being used as a modem.

I have the service now and am paying for the phone and data. But I use my phone for regular calls also.

For another $15 dollars you could have a data card, and if you use it a lot, it may be better for you. Data cards will get better speeds in excellent signal conditions. And they will work with rev. A when it comes.

Be sure to get the UM150 if you go that route. It is reporter to give better results than some of the others. And it works great with a router should you decide to go with one.

Thanks for the information. I was doing my best to keep the price around the price we're paying now for phones and internet; however, it doesn't appear that is going to be possible.

SatelliteInternet: $65.00
Cell Phone (900 Minutes): $81.00
Total: $146.00

----------------------------------------------------

SmartChoice (1200 minutes): $109.00
Second Line: $20.00
Internet Card: $59.99 OR Both Phones: $35.00

Any ideas on lowering this cost?

I also believe you don't get unlimited data with the phone, which you do with the card.

Can anyone confirm the previous poster's statements? A few of my family members in Arkansas are using their phone and claim to be getting unlimited internet connectivity. Are both methods truly unlimited?

I use a Razr and it is unlimited. But if you are getting a real good signal from a tower, you may get a little faster speed with a card.

I tested my speed a few minutes ago with the Razr and a CRT350. Here are the results:

I have a Razr I use as a modem. I pay $25 for unlimited internet. I have also been told by Alltel I must keep my phone active to receive that price.
