zPacKRat : are your jobs set to append or to overwrite media? if it's set to overwrite, jobs will fail if there is no scratch media. So make sure your jobs are set to append and they will write on un-full media.
--
If it's not broke............Overclock it!

amungus : Not sure you can have it auto select any available slot, but there is another workaround.

Do you have any media pools set up? For instance, tapes 6-8 acting as a "pool" of tapes? That way, if it needs more than two, it'll go ahead and use a 3rd one. That's one option anyway. It'd have to be part of the actual set... which may complicate your rotation schedule unless you can simply append it with such info...

kc8jwt : I don't know if it is the same, but we were running a evaluation version of version 11 and then when we decided to purchase 12 came out. We do our backups a little differently than some people do. We backup to disk and then at the end of the week backup to a L3 tape library. The setting that I have on ours in the job setup is under "Destination" we then chose under "When this job begins" append to media, overwrite is no appendable media is avaliable. I can't remember if that worked when we used it or not, but that might be worth a shot.
