HBO went on a MASSIVE advertising spree with them. They even delayed seasons (unlike the national networks) and people still came and watched.
Right now, even the free networks are begging to show edited versions of cable shows (Dexter on CBS, Battlestar Galactica on NBC, etc.) Not all good shows are on the major networks.
In fact, network television is extremely mad over the fact you can get away with a lot more on cable and even more on pay cable like HBO and Showtime. T&A sells and can't show much even after 10PM.
BTW, Emmy nominations and awards sell ad spots. |

I remember you couldn't look at any HBO channel without seeing another ad for the Sopranos. After those Emmy wins, people really started coming out. They won 4 Emmys in their first year. |
