martiColor outside the linesPremium,MVM join:2001-12-14 Houston, TX kudos:5 | [WCG-BOINC] Save WU in progress; reinstall OS; put WU "back"?? I have been unable to find the solution to this problem. I need to reinstall the OS on a cruncher, but don't want to wait until the WU finishes. Is there a way to save the WU to a thumb drive, install a new OS, and then put the WU "back?" -- Team Discovery |

Are you reinstalling the old OS or a new one? I would think, just guessing, if you are reinstalling you could pause the WU and restart it after and it would pick up where it left off because there would be no changes to your cruncher's profile. Again, that's just a guess.
As far as changing your OS and/or saving to a thumb, that's where the "I have no idea" part comes in. -- Team Discovery/ ~ Project Hope ~ |

It's an old slow cruncher that needs some attention and I have time to work on it today. The WU's take almost 30 hours to finish on that machine and the WU is not even half finished. I am talking about clean install, not repair of the OS. -- Team Discovery |

I'd stop BOINC - copy C:\Program Files\BOINC to the thumb drive.
Reinstall OS and BOINC, then copy those files back.
Might work. -- I Smell Cures! -- Our Hope |

 | You can copy the Boinc folder any where.Do your format Put Boinc folder wherever you want on your clean install.Install Boinc pointing to Boinc folder.
I've even done this going from X32 to X64. -- Bringin' It Home

1 edit | If you put your old Boinc folder back before Boinc install it goes easier.Boinc only installs .exe and leaves the rest of the files in the folder alone. If you do the install first then you have to go through this file is new BS -- Bringin' It Home

I copied the BOINC folder to the desktop on one of my computers; shut BOINC down; unistalled the BOINC program; deleted the folder under C:programs; emptied the recyle bin; ran a registry cleaner and rebooted. I then copied the BOINC folder back under the Program Files folder and installed the BOINC program.
The WU is back crunching where I was when it shut BOINC down to run my test. More hugs!!!!

1 edit | reply to marti This is the only way to go if you have multiple machines and use BoincView.BoincView sees the old folder and no BoincView setup is needed. -- Bringin' It Home

WCG BOINC
Save a WU in progress so you can reinstall the OS.
1. Copy the complete BOINC folder from C:\Program Files\BOINC (assuming that you have WCG/BOINC installed in this location) to a thumb drive. (Be sure to copy other important data files on your computer.)
2. Reinstall the OS.
3. Copy the BOINC folder back to C:\Program Files
4. Install the BOINC program. Make sure the BOINC version is the same one that you had on the computer before you "nuked" it.
