Unable to access Internet when connected to VPN

Hi,

I use Cisco VPN 4.8 to connect to my employer. I've been using this version of the connector for a few years without any problems until recently when I was given a new laptop running WinXP professional.

I have no trouble connecting and after I'm connected I have no trouble accessing any of my employers resources including websites on the intranet but intermittently I'm unable to access the internet. If I try to access www.yahoo.com for instance, the request times out. It's strange in that the problem only occurs on certain sessions - maybe 50% of the time. Occasionally on those sessions when I'm not able to access the internet, all of the sudden after being connected for some time (2 or 3 hours) it will start working again.

I've talked to my coworkers and none of them are having any problems so I'm assuming the problem is on my end but I don't know how to troubleshoot it. I'm running Mozilla 2.0.0.12 and in its network setting dialog, I've chosen "Auto Detect Proxy Settings".

Apologies in advance for what I know is vague description but this is really driving me crazy and if anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

The Cisco VPN client has an option to allow / disallow local LAN access when the VPN is active.

If you display the the connection properties, go to the TRANSPORT tab, at the bottom there is a check box for LOCAL LAN ACCESS. If it is not checked, you can try checking it. If it is greyed out, that is because of a group security policy that prevents enabling local LAN access.
