Firstly - yes, my earlier response was silly. But swhx7 had already said anything I could say in a sensible response.

Secondly - you seemed to be positing a central authority that could manage this huge data collection, and then some way for compelling every web site to obey the 'list' or else. That seems like a recipe for killing the web with bureaucracy. Perhaps I'm just a knee-jerk naysayer (it is, after all, easier to reject an idea than it is to come up with one), but on the other hand, experience is what allows you to reject bad ideas without spending too much time determining that they are bad ideas. Which is the case here? The audience will decide.

Thirdly - if you're implying that I'm the sort of person who could implement this, then yeah, maybe: if that were true, I still wouldn't want to, because it seems like deadly dull work. Was that your point?

If I were a parent, I'd probably be concerned about protecting my kids too. But I don't know what the answer in fact is - I don't think it's at either end of the "track everyone" versus "keep kids off the net" spectrum.

My idea to "sanitize" the Internet would be to leave the Internet alone and let parent subscribe to a service that would limit the child's access to approved websites. I could see a Wikipedia/Digg style system where someone posts a link to a website (along with description and age range). Parents then check out the website and vote whether they think this is appropriate or not. If the website gets enough "Yes" votes, it gets listed as Parent Approved. Parents could then look through the Approved pages and add links to these sites to their own custom Home Page.

Of course, this would have to be done in conjunction with other basic, good parenting techniques that Cudni mentioned.

By the way, do you realize that there are MEN and WOMEN that aren't 18 yet fighting overseas? I'd say they have a right to surf any site they wish.

So you expect each and every website with what you consider questionable material to maintain an access list with hundreds if not thousands of specific IP Addresses to ban or block. What happens when someone with DSL and a non-static IP who wants to access that site is assigned one of these blocked IP's? :uhh:

And who is going to PAY to maintain these access lists?

Here's a better idea...
Make the PARENTS live up to their RESPONSIBILTY has parents to monitor THEIR children.

Well, some sites are all porn all the time, and it's hard to argue. Others have nothing to do with sex.

Then there's the huge range of sites inbetween these extremes. Presumably you're proposing that the people in charge of this scheme (ICANN?) make up some definition of "pornography" and try to apply it to all the millions of sites that might, at one time or another, have some sex-related content, or images that might include unclothed humans.

What about:
* educational sites?
* medical sites with illustrations?
* porn sites masquerading as medical or educational?
* a blog that publishes an occasional nude picture when it makes the news?
* art sites?

There would be constant disputes, with prudish parents complaining that not everyone is fully clothed in the non-xxx sites, and liberals complaining that factual or opinion sites are forced into the same TLD as "midget-orgies-with-donkeys.xxx".

Please tell me where it is written that the world must be safe enough for children? Putting your kid on the internet by themselves, with no supervision is like dropping them off at an alley-way in New York City at 3 a.m. and saying "Play nicely till I return".

And finally, I have this great product that only appeals to kids, let me rent your address of "child" IPs so I can mass market to them, Please, Please, Please?

anon : Kids under 18 should not have internet access at all, it is far too dangerious and parents who do not realize this should not be bringing up children, there needs to be a seperate PG rated internet for children that is completely and constantly monitored with no privacy at all. Cars, toilets and lockers in schools need to have any "right" to privacy eliminated- children need protection from themselves and others and privacy or internet is not in this equation.

* IPs change with DHCP, this would take some continuing work on the part of the ISP.

2. Some organization collects all the lists and gives them out to websites that the parents want kids not to see.

* Are all these parents going to agree on what websites they want to keep kids away from?

3. The websites drop requests from IPs on the lists.

* How are they going to get all these various websites, operated by many different organizations in many different places, to comply with this continual tinkering of their access lists?

* It would be easier for the ISP to offer the customer some sort of "pre-filtered" connection, with the ISP doing the work and using a commercial service to put sites on the list. But this isn't a radical new idea; it's already been done.

* Clever teenagers looking for sex sites will easily get around any restrictions.

Give it to a internet establishment.
All the websites that get it can ip ban these people unless they apply legally to view it.

Also, if they kids use a different pc, the websites can monitor if it's behavior of kids from cookies, and decide to ip ban them or not using this or similar methods.

Furthermore. The parents who have their kids probing these sites can have their ip flagged, and the website can contact the parents isp and they can email or send a letter showing when the kids probed.

Otherwise it's not gonna work.
