Are we going to get throttled?

So the big news now is Bell is throttling. Teksavvy seems to be up in arms. What's up at Velcom?

Supposedly we are supposed to be throttled soon however there have only been a couple reports of this happening with our customers at this current moment.....so i guess we will wait and see for now

I'm sure I can just see what Teksavvy people are saying, but can you confirm that the throttling will just be the afternoon/ evenings hours? What will the throttling parameters? Is it a max of 30kB/s of P2P traffic? Some other arbitrary number? Or maybe it's a "dynamic" thing where it just depends on how many people are doing P2P at the time? Are you being told anything?

Hey asif9t9,

I believe the same rules will apply to wholesalers as the ones for Bell Sympatico users so expect the same.

Damn Bell is trying to play monopolist again
I bet the traffic limitation depend ONLY on there outdated hardware being chocked.
Whole idea of providing 5-7 Mb service without allowing to use it at full potential is somehow weird.
I hope the response Bell'n'Rogers get in this case will force them to actually upgrade infrastructure, instead of pretending to provide service, they are physically unable to support.

Okay, then I guess I'll head over to the Bell forum to see what's up. I was hoping Velcom would have some info.

Internet is so slow tonight. 99ms ping? Hmmm...

Hello Asif9t9,

Unfortunately, this throttling will affect all wholesalers with no wholesaler being off the hook from this issue. As you may have noticed from all the threads on dslreports.com and many other sites such as p2pnet and CBC this throttling will affect all wholesalers and there is no exception for Velcom. We are currently reviewing the "Fair Usage Policy".

I understand your concern Chrish and we are as much peeved off as anyone. I can only see one reason they're doing this, loss of customers.

We are working with several ISP's to try to come to a resolution on this matter as quickly as possible. We can't divulge to much information at this point (legal stuff).

But if worse comes to worse we will work very hard to find a way around this problem. First off Bell shouldn't be looking at our packets (data transfer) that occurs over our network. We have several scenarios we will pressure Bell. But in the end if they want to do child's play then be it. We ill possibly create some sort of application that sits on the clients side PC and that sits in the middle of our network that will scramble packets as they are sent to your side. The application will decompress the packet and thus rendering Bell's traffic shaper useless. I'm not 100% sure it can be done yet but we are investigating different possibilities. We are speaking to our developers about it.

The only limitation in this is data being transfered out to a recipient won't be encrypted. But your download speeds shouldn't be affected.

Let's hope its doable.

Again data being transferred our our network is private, so we will keep it private.

Thanks Matt. At least we know something might be in the works. I understand all this downloading may just have to come to an end at some point, but I've always figured, for me anyways, that if there are caps or throttling, I might as well switch to a "Lite" internet. I told Cogeco as much when I left their 10Mbps service because of caps.

Also, in your fight, how about a compromise. P2P traffic could be throttled to something reasonable like 200kB/s.

We are trying to resolve this any way possible. As quickly as possible as well. Its ridiculous.

Thanks. It's great to know Velcom is joining the force against bell because it's just ridiculous!

I hope the fight will be a triumph!

I've only been with Velcom a couple of months after everyone in the family kept complaining about Rogers. I noticed yesterday that the bandwidth was capped at about 30 kB/s all evening. I just checked this morning, and downloading a ubuntu iso was back up to about 120 kB/s. So I am being throttled at peak times.

Where are you located? I seem to have my regular DL speed at Mississauga Mavis x Dundas area.

Hello Canmod,

If you are experiencing some slow downs during peak hours this is due to Bell Canada throttling their wholesalers now. There is more info about this here: www.freeourbandwidth.com

Well, just thought I'd post the obvious.

Aside from the problems dslreports is having today, I watched a torrent download this afternoon between 4:00 and 5:00. At four I was cruising from around 140-200 kB/s. At around 4:50 or so - wow - it drops down to 24.5 kB/s.

I'm watching the web postings at www.freeourbandwidth.com with interest.

Amongst friends here in Ottawa, there is lots of frustration.
