Re: VERY unhappy DSLExtreme customer here..........

It is not a physical problem with the DSL line. Post some traceroutes, run the tweak test, etc. We need more info. And do all those tests connected directly to the modem, or at least shut down/disconnect all the other devices.

been there done that. Direct connect to modem, firewall, port blocking and all spyware, malware virus checking turned off, no apps running.

both the NDT test and the Tweak test fail to connect to a server.

I am getting occasional "not connected to the internet" messages.

can't connect to DSLX speed test.

Why won't you post traceroutes? or any other diagnostic information? If all you're here to do is vent/complain, we have a forum for that.

What part of unable to connect to the sites you wanted results from wasn't 100% clear????? I just spent the last 30 minutes or so with ZERO connection at all.

Clearly you have a reading comprehension problem, and can't seem to get it through your head that I have limited to no connection and unable to run your requests, so why don't you take a hike and bother someone else.

You're posting here, how are you managing that?

I'm asking you to POST A TRACEROUTE. How hard can that be?

- click start, then run...
- type cmd, hit enter
- type: tracert www.dslextreme.com, hit enter
- paste the results here

Also, it'd be useful to see the output of:

ipconfig /all

While connected directly to the modem.

That would apparently be where LIMITED connectivity kicks in. I quite clearly stated that trying to run the links you provided I get no response.

And I also see that replies have limited lengths, so my last post got completely trashed so I'll post again in 4 or 5 parts.......

since my other post got cut off.....

Right after I stated I could not connect to either the NDT test, or Tweak test servers, my connection went down completely, ZERO connection, no access, no ability to connect for a period of about 20-30 minutes.

Immediately after regaining connection, I went from 2kbps average download speed, to low 200's, a few minutes later it spiked to 700's and right before I got agitated at being told to post in the rant forum, it popped up to 1220kbps.

All predictable, these results seem to happen every single time I call and have them check the lines.

This was the Tracert ran immediately after getting a 1220 connection:

I just ran tracert, and this is what shows RIGHT NOW:

SO as a recap:

1. it has been determined my lines are fine based on line check results.

2. Viruses are not a possibility.

3. Computer issues ruled out as at least the 2 laptops run fine with no issues at other locations. problem persists only at home connections. I'd be inclined to eliminate the 3 desktop workstations as well considering the identical problem persists on known working systems.

4. Wireless Router eliminated as cause since the problem persists when it is disconnected and unplugged, and systems are attached directly to DSLX supplied ADSL modem.

5. Logic would also eliminate any cabling on my end, as several different changes with freshly purchased cables from the local electronics store has also failed to make any difference, indicating cabling is NOT the problem.

6. I am also inclined to eliminate the DSLX supplied modem, as they have sent me 3 additional units in order to resolve this issue, and that has also failed to improve results.

7. Electricity, which I failed to mention before is also off the table. I had circuits installed strictly for the my studio where the computers are setup. And those have also been checked 3 times now.

All of the above have been thoroughly checked out in detail, numerous times, and hardware and cabling changed. I've gone over and above the call of duty to try to figure this out, and a problem still persists.

And one simple fact remains, that this setup was working 100% perfect for 3 years, and suddenly one day EVERYTHING, every system stopped working except for intermittently.

That alone indicates the problem lies elsewhere. Multiple systems do not just all stop working at once.

what really bugs me is the insistence that the fault lies with me somewhere, that I must have a virus, I must have defective computers, somehow it HAS to be my fault, there can't possibly be any other explanation.

When that happened, did the SYNC light on your DSL modem start blinking or turn red/etc? In other words, did the modem lose sync?

Have you noticed any correlation between the phone ringing or anything like that, and the disconnects?

That trace looks excellent. So it looks like it's ok at times, but not at others. This *might* be intermittent sync, but please answer my question from my previous post about what the modem does during the "dead" periods.

It happens. Sometimes when new construction is prevalent, they have to splice a phone line and your loop length doubles. It is unpredictable and you cannot assume that once your ADSL line is working fine that it will forever. They are very touchy.

That alone indicates the problem lies elsewhere. Multiple systems do not just all stop working at once.
I agree, it doesn't seem to be your home equipment since you've tried numerous things to rule out most of the equipment. Pardon me for not re-reading the original post(s), but have you swapped the modem or not? Which model is your modem?

If the modem is dropping sync when these disconnects happen, that is ultimately the problem here - which could be either the modem itself, the line, or even the DSLAM/RT card having an issue. But knowing if it loses sync is critical to figure out what is going on here.

Sorry to sound like I'm accusing you, but honestly that is the problem 99% of the time.

My phone doesn't ring.

This phone line exists to support my DSL connection, 100% of my phone calls are on my cel phone, and has been that way for 6 years.

Modem doesn't, or I should say DIDN'T blink at all when this happened a bit ago. I didn't make note of which lights were on, I think it was the DSL and lan lights on solid.

Keep an eye on it the next time you lose the connection and let us know what the modem is doing (especially if it looks differently than it normally would when the connection is working properlyt).

When you lose the connection, try to run a tracert so we can see where it's dying. Does it make it to your default gateway (the first hop after your router) or not. If it's NOT making it to the first DSLX hop AND the modem isn't losing sync, that would lead me to believe it's an AT&T problem in their ATM cloud. But report back next time it happens (I hope for debugging sake it happens again soon so we can help you get this thing figure out, but at the same time I'm sure that's the last thing you want!).

We'll get this figured out. George and the other DSLX folks are excellent on here. If they can't get things working for you, I will be very surprised.

Yes, modems have been swapped. Several of them.

They just sent me modem # 4.

My current is a Dlink ADSL 2320B, it was sent to me at the end of summer last year, number 4 will probably arrive next week sometime.

OI! 4 modems...ok, I think it's safe to say that it's not the modem, then.

Definitely important for us to figure out if the modem is losing sync or not. Does that modem have a web interface by chance? You might be able to fire up the logs and see if it's dropping sync or what, maybe something in the logs correlates to the times it is dropping.

I'm not sure if it does or not. It didn't come with any instructions or reference, and I haven't been to DLink's site to see if there is or not.

Biggest problem right now, and why I seem very short about this whole thing is that this problem has really screwed me out of what was a HUGE decision on my part. I signed up for an online animation program taught by some of the biggest names in the industry. it was 15 thousand dollars.

The course was all online, with weekly recorded lectures, weekly online live sessions with the instructors and a virtual class room with fellow students. Much of the training was included in the very large streaming videos they provide, which we cannot download for permanent storage.

there were 6 classes, each one 3 months long. I managed to get through class 1 and 2 ok, but in class 3, I missed most of the lectures. Class 4 was even worse. As a result I BARELY passed them. Fortunately class 5 was covering a subject I was already experienced in, and I managed to get by without any of the lectures.

Last year I had to drop out of class 6 because I was 100% unable to participate in any form at all with class.

Then I had to take a leave of absence when the January term rolled around, and I was supposed to start again Monday. I had to call and leave a message for their admissions dept that I would not be returning on Monday.

Their rules said I could take a LOA twice in a 12 month period. After that I am dropped form the program and have to reapply at a later date and hope I am approved again.

ARGH! Sorry to hear that man!

I'm sure tomorrow when George gets in, he'll be able to help. Or one of the other fine DSLX folks here.

Do you have comcast available in your area? They will generally do a free install and pro-rate your fees if you sign up, and cancel. So in order to avoid missing any more of your class, you could do that in the interim until the DSL issues are figured out.

I found some info on that DSL modem. It _should_ have a web interface. Based on your ipconfig output, looks like your DSL modem is at:

192.168.1.1

Or is that your router? You may need to plug directly into the DSL modem to connect to it. If 192.168.1.1 is your router and not the Dlink DSL modem, plug directly in and then once you get an ip, run ipconfig again and whichever is listed as your default gateway, try opening a web browser and go to it, e.g. »192.168.0.1

Just out of curiosity, does this happen at any specific time of day ?
Eg. I had issues where I lost internet connectivity in the past for ~ 30 minutes / day or had VERY lousy service. In the end, I correlated it to when the cities sprinklers went off around the breakout box (next to where AT&T now has a Uverse VRAD box). Since I worked from home, I basically had to take my lunch around that time, and in the end, AT&T lowered my sync rate to 'help' the issue
About a month after they deployed their Uverse product in the area, I found AT&T tech's rewiring the area out around the neighborhood, and now I almost have service for 6Mbps (although AT&T claims I'm only good for 1.5Mbps).

With your newer modem, you should be able to check and post any stats from the modem itself.
