Re: [OS X] Hard drive dead in Powermac G4, lost everything

brianko : I know this reply is to a thread over a month old, but this was the first hit I got when searching for "G4 drive dead" and thought I'd add my USD0.02 worth...

The G4 uses the IBM DeskStar, a drive not known for its reliability. My G4 has been running continuously for several years, and a recent power bump brought the computer up in the dreaded "flashing folder" mode. No drive detected by the DiskUtility. Opened cover, lo and behold, the drive was indeed dead.

Sometimes drives get "stuck" and need a bit of help to get spinning. After tapping around with the plastic handle of a screwdriver with no luck, I unplugged the power cable and then plugged it back in, figuring that the extra bit of torque from power-up might be enough to free the drive.

It worked! Now I'm doing what I probably should have been doing already -- making backups.

So, the moral of the story is if you have a dead G4 drive, at least pop the side door open, fire it up, and tap around the drive. If that doesn't work, *carefully* remove the power plug from the drive (yes, while it's powered up) and reinstall. That might be enough to get the platters spinning again.

[OS X] Hard drive dead in Powermac G4, lost everything

anon : My mac crashed this morning. Its a PowerPC G4. I had a few programs open including FireFox, WoW, iChat, iTunes and Adium. I left my computer for a moment, and when I came back my iTunes music was glitching, all the windows were frozen, and the mouse icon was spinning, but not if I pointed it on the desktop. I restarted it, but on the start up screen all I saw was a folder with a ? on it. I put in the start up disk for leopard hoping to reinstall it, but it could not find either of my hard drives to install it on, but it did find my ipod. I disconnected my main HD, and only had my secondary one on. It installed just fine on it. Now when I try to hook up my other HD to get the stuff off of it, it shuts down my computer.

Is there anyway to get the data off of my dead HD?
