| Usenet downloads affect by shaping?
So thanks to my amazing torrent download speeds of a whopping 10kbs and I am debating buying a usenet membership.
I was wondering if usenet users speeds were being throttled as well or is it limited to the p2p/torrent/gaming side of things? Is it possible for Bell to modify their shaping techniques to effect usenet in the near future?
Any advice for someone considering starting on usenet? |

Can anyone else confirm this?
And do so when not using an SSL encrypted link to usenet and/or running a torrent or other encrypted program at the same time so as to set off the shaping on your line...
If this is the case, this is more than just BitTorrent and encrypted throttling... |

I'm in ottawa on bas6 and i don't notice any change in my Giganews nor the Free Teksavvy news provided with my static ip. I'm for SURE throttled on the torrent side of things but am VERY glad my news groups work.. PLUS, I don't seem to notice any difference when i download torrents. If i have Azureus open and Grabit at the same time, Azureus will do it's whopping 30KB/sec and i still get 120KB/sec from Teksavvy and close to 550KB/sec with Giganews.. |

I have heard of this Usenet thing for over 10 years of me being on the internet. However, I have never found a single explanation of what it is. Obviously it is not a website, or a FTP like service.
So what is it?
How do you access it?
How do you use it?
How do you search it?
How do you select and download a file? |

RDP Speed Test |
I just RDP'd to my home computer and when I downloaded a NZB file from the Usenet global search it was capped at 50 KB/s.. Does that imply that if you are connected VIA RDP that all traffic is throttled? |

Most things we've seen so far is that it throttles the whole connection when it detects something it needs to throttle. But I'm not sure if that's conclusive. |

I will test my connection at home when I am downloading from Newsgroups.. But the really scary thing for me is that when I connected via RDP (NOT P2P or BT or NNTP) my entire connection was throttled.. Doesn't make sense that my downloads when I am connected over RDP wont hit full speed.. They always used to go full speed (even when I was with bell) |

In my linked post above, usenet was the only application running. So I'm absolutely sure it was my usenet connection that was triggering the the throttle... what I didn't try is limiting my usenet client to a slower rate and see if that still tripped it.
I wonder how this is affecting the gamers. |

I wonder how this is affecting the gamers. I noticed some lag last night on Xbox live.. The only problem is that I have no way to verify the transfer rate coming out of my xbox 360.. I wish I could so we could start figuring out what the heck bell is doing..
I think the best part of all this throttling is that it is only going to entice coders to become more clever to get around the throttling.. Bell is trying to fight a battle they have already lost.. I guess ignorance is bliss |

I use the NG's thru a premium service (powerusenet) and haven't experienced any slow-downs at all (500+K), at any time of the day. I usually manually set it for 300-400k. I'm knocking wood that it doesn't change but not going to hold my breath. |

I wonder how much the segment length of the multi-part postings affect whether the throttle hits you or not... or how many simultaneous connections to the newsgroup server (I use 4)
Keep in mind I was only tripping the throttle periodically.
So maybe files that are split into larger chunks don't get hit by the throttle where as files split into smaller chunks trip it (ie: more chunks, the higher the upstream request rate for the next segment).
Candoo3 is your area throttled at all? If so can you experiment with the manual speed setting to find out what settings gets you throttled (if any at all?).
eitherway I've suspended my usenet account until I'm confident I can find a technique to avoid the throttling. |

It seems my usenet was being throttled because I was using a non-standard port to connect to my newshosting account.
I switched back to port 119 and well... I'll let you know if I flip-flop my position again.
