Will Our Government at any point Step up?

We are the consumers, we are the voters, we are the citizens of this great country and last time I checked, we elect our officials. As mentioned in the recent Globe & Mail Article, th CRTC and the Federal Govt. have been silent about the massive changes Bell and Rogers are proposing this year. Everything from capping DLs, to charging for every gig you DL, it seems like Canadian ISPs are going backwards while even the Evil Empire (USA) is finally going in the right direction ala Comcast. So Europe and Asia are updating their hardware and giving bigger pipelines for their consumers, and the American Govt is stepping in and protecting its citizens from Comcast and other ISPs, and in Canada, not a peep from our elected officials. My question is this. What do we have to do get our voices heard? What do we have to do to finally get Ottawa to listen to us? Ideas, solutions welcome...

Hi there,

If they are caring, they would have already done so. I presume that at least most MPs have Internet access and download here and there and wondering WTF my Internet is slow...

I haven't yet, but it can take up to a week or so. I wrote mine over an issue with getting my daughters lost citizenship card replaced - something that was supposed to take 10 days...after 6 we were told 5 months...and she was booked to leave the country in a couple weeks. Wrote my MP and got the card 5 days later...the same day that my MP's office called to say they'd look into it.

The PQ is provincial. If by that you mean the Bloc Quebecois, I would have a FIELD day with that sort of response, and I'd really run with it. They are *REQUIRED* to speak to you in both official languages.

It's time people realized that even though we the citizens do the voting govt is in power to serve big business not the Citizens.

Hi there,

Oh, the old PQ = Parti Quebecois. *lol* He keep sending me his "flyers" always in French, so I don't bother reading. I wonder where does it says that MP must required to speak to you in both official languages. I'm gonna give a yelling. *lol*

Have any parties other than the NDP spoken out against Bell yet?

At the risk of getting political, I vote NDP, but until Mulcair got elected, it was a throwaway vote in Quebec. That's the riding next to mine, though, (Westmount--Ville-Marie), so perhaps there's hope next election to get some more people in office who don't need their constituents to send them massive quantities of mail before they'll come out in favour of net neutrality.

Writing to your MP won't hurt, but for major policy issues like this, it's better to aim higher and write to the relevant ministries and to the PM's office.

Write to the Minister of Industry (responsible for the competition bureau), the Minister of Canadian Heritage (responsible for the CRTC) and the Prime Minister.

Good advice....Does anyone have links to the offices or even the email addresses so we can start sending passionate, mature, well written letters to these individuals.

Send snailmail only. Email doesn't count because it's too easy to send.

Don't be abusive.

Addresses are easily available through the magic of Google.

As long as Stephen Harper is the Prime Minister, nothing is going to happen. The major Canadian ISPs will get their way.
Stephen Harper seems like a hard core commercialism monger, pro Fortune 500, would do anything for them.

Perhaps we should do what this blogger suggests to make a difference?:

Click here and find your PM (Member of Parliament) then call them and email them. Even visit them in office. And talk to them about this, make them aware.

This issue is picking up momentum every hour, so the time to make the government do something about is is prime.

LOL Guspaz, careful. People will now think you're a *gulp* communist.

okay, enough taking the piss out of North Americans for the day.

I'm not a citizen but landed immigrant. Does anyone know if I could also write to the local MP or MPP or won't my say count?
