It's a good read and it calls out Rogers and Bell. |

| Good story, but won't do much good , Bell and Rogers will continue to spin this as "protecting their network", "ensuring quality service to all users" etc etc etc
Until the spineless CRTC decides to get into regulating Internet providers, nothing is going to happen. |

| reply to Newfie Isn't it great when they use that line?. WHAT "quality of service"?
Their going to drop the cap for Extreme by 5 gigs. What's five gigs right? Well in the Globe today they say each gig over the quota will be $5. In a chart, $1.25. That's still profiteering as their transit rates are only a CENT or two per gig. But forget that for now. At $5 per gig they have a maximum charge of $25. So in May if you pay your bill and use a 100 gigs everyone is happy. If you do the samething in June your going to pay $25 extra. FOR NOTHING. That shows how disingenuous this is. Their going to rape a lot of people the first two months with that $25 charge.
The Globe and Mail with their, "hog" talk are obvious idiots that will print whatever Roger's says verbatim. |

Transit providers do not charge on data TRANSFERED like Rogers are charging users, it is usually X dollars per Mbps on a 95 percentile model. Most transit is 15-35$ / Mbps (notice small b, as in BITS not bytes) with a base commit (for example as 500 Mbps).
There are many many other costs involved:
-Equipment -Hosting/Power/AC of equipment -Staff to design/manage/etc -Marketing team to advertise -Circuit costs to different Phubs (some are in the states and this is NOT cheap) -I am sure this is not even the start
My main point is:
You have no idea about total cost of a large network such as rogers
Be prepared....a usage model on pricing will eventually come to users instead of a flat rate....specially with protocols such as bittorrent on a network. |
