Should this turn out to be true, it's actually a step to reduce competition. Storm has been providing wireless service as well as dialup, DSL, and cable Internet access for quite a long time (15 years?) in the Eastern Ontario region. Xplornet recently signed an agreement with the city to supply broadband to people in the metro Ottawa area who can't get it by traditional means (cable, phone line, WiMax) due to where in the city they are (metro Ottawa is the size of the GTA, York and Peel regions put together). They've been using their wireless and satellite solutions but this means that instead of building new infrastructure they're going to buy out a competitor to use theirs instead. Fewer players, fewer choices.

Re: Xplornet buys storm internet

It's true. The email went out yesterday afternoon the Storm Announce list....

To: Subject: Storm Internet Services - Service Announcement

Storm Internet Services and Barrett Xplore Inc. (www.xplornet.com),
through its Xplornet brand, are pleased to announce that Xplornet will
now be the service provider for Storm's wireless Internet services
customers. Barrett Xplore is Canada's largest and fastest growing
wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP), with tens of thousands of
subscribers across the country.
Xplornet offers both fixed wireless and satellite high-speed Internet
services, enabling Xplornet to reach virtually every single Canadian.
We are confident that you will be pleased and impressed with
Xplornet's service offering.

But Xplornet has been leeching off of Storm from the beginning. People on Xplornets wireless, their speed tests would show either Ontario Hydro or Storm internet as their ISP.
So Maybe Xplornet caused Storm to have to sell? Since Xplornet contracts out most of it's operations, instead of spending money on infrastructure. So Storm has been spending lots of money to supply Xplornet with bandwidth. While Storm had a wait list 4 months long for new Storm customers. I bet the wait list just disappeared..
