[OC] Q6600 Help

I should be getting my 6600 next week and will be overclocking it to 3.0 ghz. I am a little confused about the ratios such as 1:1 and 5:6 and what that actually represents. What would be the best way to overclock the q6600 to 3.0 ghz with ddr2 800 memory? Should i do 9x333 and leave the memory at 667 or set the dram multiplier at 2.4 and do 9x333? Just not sure what would actually give me the best performance.

Ideally, you want a 1:1 ratio between FSB and memory. So yes, you'd do a 9x333 multiplier, so run the RAM at 667.

There is a modest increase in performance with a 1:1 ratio. The newer memory controllers generally do a good job of hiding the latency penalties.

Go for 3.2Ghz!

8x400 should be easily attainable with proper air cooling.

Slap in some DDR2-800 sticks and you're good to go at 1:1 FSB:RAM speed.

Was just about to ask that.. Good might shoot for that then since I did get a after market cooler. Anyone know the default voltage values for the g0 stepping? I keep finding the range, but not the default.

Also I shouldnt have to change the memory's voltage correct? The specs on newegg for the g.skill 800 i bought only goes up to 1.9

It's a range because each chip has a different value, I guess based on the quality of the chip to run at the stock speed.

Seems most GO's are in the low 1.2v's.

Google Q6600 VID and there are a few threads with people posting their VID's.

I wish you luck! I got a dud Q6600, which won't do 400x8. The only way I can get it stable over 3GHz is to run it at 356x9. I seem to be in the minority, though, so you'll likely be able to do 400x8 no problem.

What's your stepping/pack date?

It is a G0 SLACR, not sure of the pack date...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what are your other components....have you tried for help?

Yep, I've had a couple of threads about it. It's definitely not the MB, because the MB does 400+ FSB with an X6800 (actually, an engineering sample X6900). The RAM I had in there was 2x1 DDR2-800 G.Skill stuff that supposedly would do 1066 with 2.1v. But, recently I built a 2nd box and bought new RAM (PC2-8000) and even with that it doesn't work stably at 400x8. I run mprime (prime95 for FreeBSD) and it gets rounding errors unless I drop the FSB. I haven't tried finding the point where it craps out between 9x356 and 8x400, since I'm relatively happy with 3.2 GHz.

Okay so I finally got my system up and running and now working on trying to overclock it. I havent overclocked a system in a while so I am following this guide at »www.tomshardware.com/forum/24000···ls-guide

Question though. It says I should manually enter in the pcie frequency and pci sync control or it may raise with my overclock. I have a GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R and I see the option to set the pci frequency, but there is no option for sync control. Should I not worry about changing the sync control or is it hidden in the bios some where?

After researching for hours I finally came across some info that stated that most modern overclock capable boards that dont have a pci clock sync option that means its already locked at 33 and is not changeable.

Well been changing voltages the past two days now and I think I am now running stable @3.2ghz with 1.288 volts for about 12 hours now (gonna let it keep running) The last voltage i tried was 1.275 so I might try the voltage in between which is 1.282.

Question though, the temps of core 1&2 have been around 58-60 while 3&4 are around 52-55 (about an hour after prime95 on long fft) are these temps too high? Little concerned it just seems high for 3.2ghz and I am wondering if temperature wise it would be better just to settle with 3 ghz.

One other question. You think the large fft test is sufficient enough testing wise?

Could someone show me where there is real-world evidence that running the RAM divider at 1:1 is better than, say, 4:5? I've heard the 1:1 thing plenty of times, and its how I run my E6300 (2.8GHz, 400FSB, 800MHz RAM), although I've built other machines that are not running 1:1 and they're rock solid. If Ryan keeps the 9X multi and runs a 4:5 divider, I think he gets 833MHz RAM speed. Not sure how this would be worse than 1:1 667 or 1:1 800 (with lowered multi). other than his chip with the lowered multi would be doing 3.2GHz, which is obviously a bit faster.

A 5:6 divider would give him 3.0GHz and 800MHz RAM speed.

Also, Ryan, on the temp thing, I forget what cooling setup you have. Do you have aftermarket air cooling? My E6300 pushed slightly over 60 in Orthos a few times. Nothing I do real-world pushes it there though. That's getting uncomfortably warm but then again I think thermal shutdown is around 85C. You should be fine, but less heat would be better. Keeping it at 3.0 might be a nice compromise. I backed my E6300 down from 3.0 for the same reason.
