I'm a Usenet guru, I'll answer your questions in a way that that you will understand. :)

With Usenet, I can find a show for example and start the usenet download in under a minute.

Torrents are more of a permanent repository (to an extent)
Usenet is more of a temporary repository, about 70-150 days on average depending on the provider.

You need a Professional/Commercial Usenet feed which uses the NNTP protocol. I personally use Newsguy.com
You then setup a newsreader I use 2 Xnews and Agent

>How do you search it

I personally use binsearch.net (free). Once you do your search you will see 1 2 3 ect. on the left side.
Put a checkmark on the collection of files that you want.
Then click on Create nzb
Then import those nzb files in Agent and select to download at will.

For example, goto binsearch.net and put in
"Biggest Loser S05E14"
Select Maximum Age of Post "1 week"
and "show by Calendar date" and hit search
it will give you this
The.Biggest.Loser.S05E14.PDTV.XviD-DIMENSION - [01/61] - "the.biggest.loser.514.pdtv-dimension.nfo" yEnc (1/1)
collection size: 780.37 MB, parts available: 2118 / 2118
- 1 nfo file
- 10 par2 files
- 49 rar files

view NFO

Then check the box right beside the 1. with a checkmark and then select "create nzb" then load up Agent which is a nzb compatible newsreader. I even have nzb files to open up automatically with Agent, and have agent to automatically start to download the imported nzb files.

Like I said I can search and start downloading files in under a minute and nntp is "unshaped".

None of this is free. There's a reason some settle for torrents. Torrents are free.

Newzbin 12 bucks a year (if you buy cheap at christmas time).
Newsleecher 12 bucks a year for the lease.
Giganews, 30 bucks a month for the uber account (they have cheaper rates).

Throttled is not in my list of acceptable options.
Nor is slow at all. Anything less than 500k is unacceptable.

With my Teksavvy account the only thing unaffected are ssh on port 22, http, ftp.

I don't use BT so I can't tell if there is a throttle that way. With NG, I'm using 6 connections, standard port 119 and no encryption. I've tried at all speeds and it "seems" fine. It seems my usenet was being throttled because I was using a non-standard port to connect to my newshosting account.

I switched back to port 119 and well... I'll let you know if I flip-flop my position again.

Keep in mind I was only tripping the throttle periodically.

So maybe files that are split into larger chunks don't get hit by the throttle where as files split into smaller chunks trip it (ie: more chunks, the higher the upstream request rate for the next segment).

I noticed some lag last night on Xbox live.. The only problem is that I have no way to verify the transfer rate coming out of my xbox 360.. I wish I could so we could start figuring out what the heck bell is doing..

I just RDP'd to my home computer and when I downloaded a NZB file from the Usenet global search it was capped at 50 KB/s.. Does that imply that if you are connected VIA RDP that all traffic is throttled?
