Lafayette

Brainwashed or lackeys it seems are many here.
Big business could give a crap lest you pay what they demand.
So threatened they are that a service be provided without gouging.

Medical, water, sewer, electric, phone, radio, TV, Internet should be outside the control of the scat-covered hands of corporations.

They've reaped so much and given so little.

Socialism? Maybe a term, but unless your an idiot, you know what's right.

What the hell are you talking about? Government in general in Louisiana is so corrupt that they always are in trouble for something or other. I give you an example. I was born and raised in a city about 30 miles southwest of Lafayette and all utilities are controlled by the city. I would like you to know that city residence pay almost twice the rates that the folks on Slemco pay out in the country for electricity. I know what they are trying to do with this and it's not economic development. Lafayette will never be able to attract the ones like myself back to the area with below average pay for technology fields. I can almost guarantee that if this project starts to bleed money that rates on other services are going to go up.

On second thought. They will do like the guys in Harris County Texas and use toll roads to keep this puppy alive. Do not think that the government are not out to bleed you also. They are always looking for a way to tax you.

Grew up in a City with own power (electric), water & sewer systems. Always better (reliable) and cheaper than Edison or PGE.

Now live in PGE 'country' and with of three 'private' water companies. Whisper of wind an power goes out. Water rates just went up 60%.

PGE just bought a new Embraer regional jet (25 million$) so five or six execs can daily shuttle back and forth from OAK (Hdqtrs) , SBP (Diablo Nuclear plant), and Arcata (Wave energy demo).

Corps. tend to exist for profit. Not people.

The good news is the pricing on those services are regulated by the Public Utilities Commission. So if you think your local government would do any better, guess again.

Actually, in most states, water and sewer rates are not PUC controlled, only electric and phone.

Hm, my hometown has a municipal electric company too, and seems to work pretty well- but a neighboring town with a municpal water system has far worse water than we do with our water conglomerate, though, on the other hand, water prices are so high we have to get a state subsidy to keep them down...

I agree with you on one point. The Louisiana gov't and government in general is always looking for a way to tax you. However, this project is likely to kick at least one of the providers into high and and get them to compete. It's a start.

At least they'll have fiber speeds.
