I got the relative velocities  backwards, not the wiki.<br><br>Your explanation makes more sense, and it's why I will treat it as authoritative, until something more authoritative comes along. :D<br><br>Thanks for sharing your knowledge.]]></description>

Remember the velocity of the medium is faster in the center than the edge. <br><br>Too fast in the center and the needle would jump the groove or have to track heavier with more wear. Too slow on the outside and you would lose the higher frequency characteristics in the recording.<br><br>The 16 2/3 were very slow, only good for spoken word recordings.<br><br><b>Added:</b> from the wiki: ..."frequencies as low as about 0.5 Hz (the frequency at which a 33+1/3 rpm record turns on the turntable)".  It's definitely a calculation. 0.4998 Hz at 33 rpm is not nearly as elegant. :D]]></description>
