Slow access to email via pop

Over the last week I am seeing a very slow reply to my get mail requests via pop. I am not getting any error messages but it will take several minutes before I get the messages or the report that no messages are on the server. Anyone else seeing this?

Ok, guess I should have looked at some other other email discussions. It seems others are having pop issues as well.

Been this way for a few days - no error messages, and it eventually completes, but very slowly.

I doubt this has anything to do with the spam filtering issue being discussed in another thread - the difference between this situation and earlier ones is that there are far fewer error messages or hangs - it's just very slow.

When I get this slow down I just close outlook and then re-open it and it works.

I do that too - it has not been a completely successful strategy this time.

My guess is that it's the same old thing; over-crowded servers. History has shown that they never bother to add capacity until things get out of hand, or close to it.

I would imagine that the relationship or lack thereof between ATT and Yahoo also comes into play. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing?

I got it twice today and closing and opening it up worked. And then every time it happens I get the standard e-mail from AT&T saying I am not using a secure third party e-mail program or something like that.

Right now it is "NO ACCESS VIA POP"

I could live with slow access, while they fixed things...

I am surprised we haven't heard anything from any of the mods yet about what is going on...

Off and on, for years now, this has occurred, and there have been simelar threads about it. If I remember, once there seemed to be indications that it followed Outlook rather than Outlook express. Another time it was some hardware change, that didn't get prior patch, I think...
Still others, it had to do with the port settings that changed...

The end result is, we post, and things eventually get patched.

I doubt it is "us"....

P.P.S: I'm seeing it on Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express

Yes, I hope that the issue is fixed soon. The slow access is bothersome. FYI, I don't use outlook for email.

Also happens with Windows Mail in Vista.

I think it is just the same old slow/overcrowded server issue that has risen from the dead several times over the past few years.

I can't see how it can relate to the spam throttling issue that is being discussed in another thread.

I've been seeing the same behavior in Thunderbird and with my mail checker (Pop Peeper).

FWIW, I use Apple Mail on a Mac, and I'm having the "server timed out" problems too.

Your error message says, "Task 'pop.ameritech.yahoo.com'...". Did you not get the word to use 'pop.att.yahoo.com'? With port 995 and SSL enabled.

Yes it is correct... It's been working for months...

Just sometimes it stops, and we're a bit perplexed that it can't be fixed, and remained fixed...

OH, I see what your asking about.... thats a holdover from years ago.... Good point
That is a title, found in Outlook 2003 in the "More Settings" General area... You can make that print whatever you want... It now errors out with a different name.

Depends on the mail client configuration. I generally change the account name away from a server name. If it were my client, it would report something like:

"Task 'Norman - receiving'...". But that error message is from MS Outlook. AFAIK, the error is reported slightly different in MS Outlook Express, and is not quite as ambiguous. MSOE actually specifies both account name and server name; together in a single paragraph.

P.S. Forgot to ask if you are up to date on MS patches. There is one version of MS Outlook which barfs on SSL connections if it is not at the latest Service Pack level. I use the Distributing POP3 Client of Mercury/32 for POP3 fetches, and I have not seen any errors lately.
