| Selecting laptop RAM ...speed & quality differences?
I recently ordered a new laptop with Vista 64. It comes with 2GB RAM, the lowest amount I could get preinstalled from HP to save money.
I see several vendors on pricewatch with 4GB notebook RAM

DDR2 PC-5300 667 cost around $70, and my machine may take DDR2 P-6400 800 which cost around $80

I realize that you can buy faster RAM than your system can make use of and that it will then run at the lower speed.
• The FSB on the processor is 800MHz and I upgraded to this faster processor ...Does FSB speed relate to the RAM speed?
• Will the PS2-6400 800 perform better than the PS2-5300 667 in this computer?
• Among the ones offered within a specific speed at pricewatch, is there a true difference in speed and quality? (for example, some sites offer "Platinum" or "Diamond" class with an upcharge...but is this just hype?)...
• What other quality or performance measures should I look for when buying RAM for a high-end processor?

I think OCZ is a good brand. Is that correct?
Anyone have an opinion on this RAM? Great price, but can or should I do better on quality?

| What makes the most sense is to simply match the type of ram that it comes installed with, because that is what the bios has been set for. If you get the computer, and it comes with 2gb PC2-5300, then I would go with that...if it comes with PC2-6400, then go with that.
Nothing wrong with OCZ. Better "quality"? Frankly, for a notebook user that is a moot point, as unless you like shortening the life of your components drastically (not much that you can do to improve a notebook's cooling ability), there is little opportunity for over-clocking, which is really the only primary need to go with any one brand of memory over the other.
All DDR2 from mainstream vendors will be more than adequate to the task...buy by price.

One question. Does the 800 FSB of the processor have anything to do with whether it would take RAM with a clock speed of 800 vs 667? |

| Is it a 32 bit Vista laptop ? That Microsoft says no matter what you do its only going to use around 3.12gb of the installed ram?
If it comes with 2gb ram, most likely that's going to be two 1gb modules. I think if you try to match the brand and just swap one out for a 2gb module for 3g total installed. You'll be happy and save a buck or two too.
I probably have the same chip-set - mobile 965 express and 3gb ddr2/667 thats reports half that speed at 4clocks.
Using one corsair 1gb and one Kingston 2gb and boot reports Dual Channel L-Shaped Mode and SiW and others show it is still running symmetrical. |

Koam, I am not sure about the FSB versus memory speed. As I mentioned though, the thing is that you might as well just go by whatever speed memory that is installed, because that is what the system is set up for. Unlike many desktop bios, it is pretty unlikely that you have any user-adjustable memory speed/performance settings in the notebook's bios

With today’s chipsets there is no direct relationship between memory and FSB speed.
Does HP offer PC2 6400? You probably need to talk to someone at HP or Crucial to see if the PC will actually use the 6400 at full speed. My educated guess is with the chipset you have it will use it at full speed.
I don’t have any experience with OCZ memory. Regardless of what brand of memory you buy run Memtest86+ overnight to verify that it is good.

Cpuz will tell you what your current (and future)memory speeds are and it doesn’t change the registry or scatter its files all over your system.
