[ Bright House] "Spectrum "Enhancement" in Detroit suburbs

Bright House will be doing a "Spectrum Enhancement" this spring and summer in the suburban Detroit area. They are upgrading node by node. It will offer more HD and faster internet. Anyone have any more info on this? Could this be DOCSIS 3.0?

More then likely they upgrading to 1 Ghz gear from 860 Mhz or lower... Anything above 860Mhz isn't usable by currently issued cable boxes, DCR TVs, or DOCSIS 2 modems, so anything the cable company puts up there will require new CPE gear.

I know they plan on doing like some sort of new shit down here in Florida. A tech told me something but I forgot what it was. Something like live feeds where it takes a while to switch channels. Kinda like EVERY channel on demand always.

Which, interestingly, is not really related to the 3ghz upgrades. As MacLeech noted, the 3ghz upgrades require either a new cablemodem or a new cable box to take advantage of.

My guess is they'll do something like release a big HD lineup utilizing the new space with MPEG-4, and require the customer go get a new box to do it. They can relegate all the old HD DVRs to SD customers. The extra space will be useful for DOCSIS 3 as well. I'll be happy with either one.

"Spectrum enhancement" is typically a euphemism TW uses when talking about the deployment of switched video. It doesn't necessarily mean an improvement in data speeds or the deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 although both are eventual goals.

TW is under considerable pressure to better prepare for the coming expansion of high definition video programming as corporate headquarters signs more and more rollout contracts for HD cable nets. In many cities, there is simply insufficient bandwidth to accomodate the analog and present digital tiers -and- the additions of at least a dozen new HD channels in most franchise areas in 2008.

So, TW is managing the spectrum it has by localizing delivery of lesser-viewed cable networks (Fox Business News, Current, CNBC World, digital home shopping nets, etc.) so that they are transmitted to neighborhood nodes "on demand" (ie. when a viewer is actively watching or seeking to watch them). When nobody in a node is watching them, which will often be the case, that bandwidth is free for TW to use elsewhere.

The more channels delivered this way, the more free spectrum is theoretically available on their network.

Of course, eventual conversion of the entire platform of cable networks to digital delivery solves this problem even better, but consumers would rebel about having to attach a cable box or cable card on every set.

In the LA area, Time Warner is definitely replacing all of the street gear with new, 1ghz capable C-COR equipment. In his case, he mentions "node by node" and that it was going to be a "spring to summer" process, so that makes me believe his area might be seeing the same thing.

You might check out the network status page on »help.rr.com . In LA that page is very messy with all kinds of crap eveywhere, but if you look through it you can see bits about what they're doing.
