| Traffic Throttling/Packet Shaping for Torrents?
I've never had a problem using torrents. A few days ago, I noticed I was getting really really slow speeds (1-40 KB) when trying to downloading something using the Bit Torrent protocol (Using uTorrent).
So, I tried testing torrents of OpenOffice and Ubuntu, my favorite way to test if my setup is working correctly. Usually I get high speeds from 500-800 KB a second. However, a very popular torrent such as OpenOffice now only gives me 200-230 KB a second. I pay for an 8 Mb connection and I did speed tests, and everything seems to be working correctly, with the exception of torrents. (Yes, I'd checked everything)
Is SuddenLink throttling my traffic? I'm in Louisiana and I was just curious.
If there are off peak hours that I can torrent with no throttling, what are they?
Thanks! |

| reply to bluefiberop0 Standard operating procedure. Some have had success with turning on encryption. Don't torrent (except built-in clients like WoW and some movie services) myself so cannot give specific advice.
Hah. Just noticed the headline at the top of the page where I'm viewing this post is about Comcast throttling

| reply to bluefiberop0 They are indeed throttling your connection.I'm in Louisiana also and I was thinking that suddenlink had turned the corner and I could get some good speed but had to switch back to AT&T because of this and the fact that they are blocking ports now and doing packet inspection. It is not a bandwidth crunch that others are being feed as to the problem. I thought it was a crunch but figured out that my speed test were fine but when I wanted to download big files are run a bittorent my speed would be cut in half just all of a sudden and that the program would complain that my ports were being blocked. I miss Cox because suddenlink is a joke and I wish they would sell Louisiana off to another company. |

| reply to bluefiberop0 I am not having any problems with torrenting here in Texas.
I have my download speed set to max, but I have my upload set to 50kbps, as going any higher will cause my modem to reset (wont for downloads though, get constant ~700kbps on some torrents that have plenty of seeds) |

| reply to bluefiberop0 It sure seems that they are throttling me. I have been using this technology for many years and haven't had trouble until Suddenlink bought Cox. Encryption doesn't seem to help. Any file over 1Gb seems to set off their alarms and limits. Files under that limit will practically hit the cap on download speed. Files larger than that throttle to under 50kB/s. I'm not sure what they are doing but they're shutting us down somehow. I think it is very likely that they're using multiple technologies rather than any single one.
Suddenlink seems determined to not provide it's users with what we pay for. Yes, your speed test will be fine but that is about all. -- "It's hard to leave when you can't find the door." - Joe Walsh |

| I'm not saying Suddenlink or Comcast or anyone else is necessarily right to traffic shape or block certain protocols, but I wager you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere in their respective TOS agreements a passage that says you are assured of the ability to send 1 gig+ files at full speed often and whenever you desire. |

| I'm not thinking about top speed. We all know that no one guarantees top speed all the time. What I'm talking about is something better than 1% of what I'm paying for.
It's pretty simple really. If we are paying for bandwidth, even if it is "up to" a certain amount, then why should it matter how we use that bandwidth? Apparently what we are really paying for is some undefined and unspecified amount of bandwidth only for certain, ISP approved, applications. Being as this is the case, why won't they even specify what the usage caps are? Suddenlinks policy statement doesn't define these limitations anywhere that I have ever seen. The only definition I have ever seen had no hard figures in it at all. It said only "excessive use", leaving the definition of that term an arbitrary decision of management.

| reply to bluefiberop0 I have discovered that DCC recieves do have certain windows of reasonable speed. Last night from 2Am until around 7AM I could get 500-600KBs which I consider the standard. However at 1200 Noon today that speed is cut back to 100-200Kbs. And I expect to see it eventually drop so low that a connection can't be maintained. Looking back the last time I could get a connection to stay connected was 2 weeks ago. For those of you who haven't got DCC experience most servers will drop the connection when it runs under 10Kbs for over a time out limit you set in your client. However the server end can also set such limits. The point is that starting in early to mid Feb 2008 DCC traffic has been curbed and killed randomly. But there have been windows when traffic was normal. in my area I can't really say that BT has been interfered with because during the same time frame when DCC was being reduced or killed BT seems to be normal. |

| reply to bluefiberop0 I don't have any problems with any bittorrent downloads as long as there are plenty of users out there seeding. I downloaded an item last night that was 170Mb with speeds around 800kBps(not kbps). The difference between this download and the download of the 4Gb file that was transferring around 200kBps was the number of seeders. The smaller file had app 8000 full seeders and only 5000 leechers at that time while the 4Gb file had 10 seeders and 800 leechers.
There are some good guides out there on which torrent to use and how the number of seeders to leechers affects your download speed. I've yet see real proof of throttling on Suddenlink's network (doesn't mean it's not happening). |

| reply to bluefiberop0 Ok, here's a screen capture of Ubuntu downloading via bittorrent. As you can see, it's not being throttled. This download is on a 6Mbps connection from the Alexandria, La. region. |
