Roadrunner Turbo....Worth it?

I'm an avid gamer and was wondering if it is worth the extra $10 a month in my area to get this for online gaming.

How have peoples experiences been with it so far? (I'm in upstate NY)

Turbo is unlikely to affect gaming performance unless you host private games or attempt to game while uploading data.

Client side gaming from my perspective (FPS) is more about latency than speed.

It also depends on what Game you play. I play COD4 with Custom Maps, so I need to download alot. Turbo is WELL worth the extra $10 if you need it for that.

Gamers want latency, the fastest time from one point to another...

Turbo is bandwidth, same distance, same latency from one point to another, but now you can carry more traffic, however gaming doesn't involve any bandwidth/traffic that turbo offers over standard...

You will not see a difference in gaming, besides $10 out of your pocket every month.

You can only download as fast as the server is going to upload... Upload is always capped on servers, you don't want to lag out your server's players while someone is hogging the upload with downloading a map...

TW in this area offers 4/364, 10/1 and turbo's 15/2...

No server i've been on will max out your download on any of those... Even if you do, whats the difference between 1 minute wait on 10/1 and a 2 minute wait on 4/364... and for $10/mo you wait 30 seconds instead of 1 minute or two while you download a new map that comes out maybe once a week?

56kbps Dial-up provides eough bandwidth even for today's complex games. The issue, as allready mentioned, is one of latency. Paying 10 dollars more a month for more bandwidth will not change the latency at all. If you want lower latency you may want to look at your local DSL providers. DSL typically has lower latency due to it's design.

I play on a server that Maxes my Download speed. I have the 15/768. It uses a Redirect. I dont like to wait forever on a download, so to me, the extra $10 a Month is WELL worth it. This server is always full 30-36 Players and I still get 1.30-1.74MB Download. I think that is the Full 15Mb Download, if not, Close to it. If you play COD4, PM me and I will tell you the server name to try yourself.

They run anywhere from 20-75mb on each map. The server I play on usually add three to five maps a week, or modifies a few, so they need to be downloaded again. All I am saying is, "It is worth it to me to have the Turbo". We dont know how the OP is, so it is good to have a few different views on it. We also have a Teenager CPU, 4yr. old CPU, and My CPU on same line. I wouldnt move my service back to the 7Mb Plan for nothing.........

The difference in speed between 7mbps and 10mbps is little. The only advantadge to the service is the increased upload. You only need to literally wait maybe 2-3 seconds longer to download a new map.

Here in Marion, Ohio, we dont have the 10Mb Plan. Only 7/512 and 15/768. Wish we had more upload, but the download is ok.

Former longtime RR customer here who has been pleasantly surprised by what we are seeing from Frontier DSL ..... been on DSL now for two weeks and loving it. We had tried RR Turbo once and really for what we do on the net, the extra speed wasn't worth it. I mean, the browsing wasn't any faster and we do not download enough large files to warrant having the extra download speed. But now we are on DSL and I am seeing very good speed ( 10 mb/sec download and 1 mb/sec upload ) and low latency. My son plays games online and he finds our new ISP perfectly acceptable for what he does online. And we are saving money over what we were paying RR.

I think road runner turbo is worth it. You get more upload " 1 meg in my area" which means you get to host games without lag. I like to host gears of war on the xbox 360 and they all say my connection is good unless they suck then you know they say they are lagging. N e ways turbo is good for gaming and 10 dollars a month more is nothing. What is that like going to the movies or going to eat. You can easily get 10 bucks.

Here in Rochester, NY Turbo is 15/1. The upstream stays consistent, but the downstream, no matter what tier you have stays between 4-6Mb during prime time. To me though, its worth the extra $10/mo.

512kbps worth of upstream bandwidth would be more then enough for hosting a game of 16 people. Once again, bandwidth has almost nothing to do with gaming, as a 44kbps dialup connection provides enough.

I would like to see you hosting team fortress 2 16 player on a 44kbps connection or gears of war.

so what's the best way of improving your latency?

Getting your connection through an ISP that doesn't have overloaded nodes, oversold backbones, and generally piss poor support.
