You know, it is never a problem when we can buy what we "want"...not many users with $2.5K notebooks are complaining about 'em! :o

It is in the budget class that most of the "hard feelings" exist, and it is a bit odd that we tend to praise/blame brands when it is really usually the configuration that is in question!

Not so much in this forum, as there tend to be "educated" users, but in many other forums I see a repeating reaction that tends to go like this:

"I hate (name your brand) laptops, because I bought one, and (A) I dropped it, and the cheap plastic case did not hold up like a titanium-alloy case would...(B) The Celeron CPU ran real weak :o (C) Crysis didn't run so hot on the poky integrated graphics that came on this (D) All of the above.

When choosing a laptop, I always key in on exactly what I expect of it...games...graphics...durability...whatever...then, I decide what hardware features I need for that laptop to fill those needs. In fact, in today's computers, CPU actually is not often a flaming issue to me...as long as it is sufficient to get the job done.

Only then do I start looking at which brands carry which models that meet those needs.

Recently I read a post from a guy griping about the "cheap" Dell Vostro that he bought...wouldn't play games worth a damn, and not all that solidly constructed...well hell! He bought it with integrated graphics, a puny hard drive, and one of the lowest rated CPUs! It probably went for somewheres around $550 give or take a few bucks...whaddya expect???

Then again, my mom is thinking about buying an Acer laptop that is on sale for $450. Celeron CPU, 1gb ram, 120gb drive, Vista Basic...but she will only use it for email, on-line shopping, very basic stuff. I expect that she will like it just fine.
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?

Given a 17" with replacement capabilities to the desktop, it's worth the extra money; just.

Cheers

Hey Kiwi, that was no "slap" on anyone spending $2.5K on a higher-end notebook at all! Unlike you, I have absolutely no need for a discrete graphics solution, and in fact, for me, integrated graphics is the better solution, in terms of cooler running and lower battery usage...but then, I do not play games (anymore), and the integrated graphics perform just fine for all the functions I need.

Same thing with the lower-end, 1280x800 15.4" screen. I simply have no need or desire for a higher end LCD...but I certainly can not blame anyone else who does desire one!

Fact is, there are very valid reasons why some notebooks cost $700, and some $2700...but when folks here talk about given machines, I do like to point out that you do, in the end, get what you pay for! When someone buys a sub $1K notebook, and then complains about gameplay ability, or how poorly the case/screen held up during a 2 week trek into the jungle, etc., welll...folks ought to know what they paid for, right?

When someone here asks "How is (name a brand & model) this laptop?", I always look at it from within it's "class". In other words, is it a budget-class notebook, a "ruggedized" model for lots of travel, or a high-performance graphics capable machine?

For example, if you ask me how I like my HP Pavillion dv6625us, I'll tell you "Great!"...within it's range, as a budget ($700) notebook! If you asked me to compare it to a $2K model...then I would have to say "Not so hot!"...but then, I did only spend $700...before rebate...
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?

It is kind of frustrating, in that many of the "different" model numbers are often very, very minor permutations, really often just for the sake of giving a vendor the abilty to say "Exclusively at (XYZ Store), Lowest price on this model" Yup, because that particular model number, may be sold only through that retailer
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?

PeteC2 : OK, entirely too many models to comment on individually there, but here goes a brief explanation:

Amongst the HP Pavillion "DV" series, the dv600's (I believe that the dv6700s are the latest?) are 15.4" screens, the dv9700s, 17" screens, and the dv2700s 14.1" screens.

Within the base models, there are tons of variations in CPU type (Intel or AMD), speed, amount of memory and HD size, graphics, etc. For example, I have the HP Pavillion dv6626us (the "us" denoting country intended for)...which is the 15.4" screen with an AMD Turion TL-58 CPU, 160gb drive...etc. One of the silly reasons for so many "number differences" with a model, such as the dv6000 series, is that it gives re-sellers such as Best Buy, the ability to sell an "exclusive to Best Buy" model.

IMHO, I would not concentrate on model numbers...that'll drive you nuts...rather focus on what processor, size hard drive, amount of ram etc., that you want.
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?

Brocoli : Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new HP laptop. I made a table with only the ones that has a AMD Turion. Then, I wrote down the HD size the RAM, etc, for each of them.

Now, looking at the table, for each HP serie, there seem to be a laptop that has almost the same specs that a model in all the other serie.

Example:

Model	Speed	Socket	HD	Mem	VideoCard	VideoRAM
2713	2.2 64 250	2 7150M UMA	799
2728	2.2 64 250	2 7150M UMA	799
6603	2.2 64 160	2 7150M UMA	559
6670	2.2 64 250	2 7150M UMA	559
9635	2.2 64 240	2 7150M UMA	559
9723	2.2 64 250	2 7150M UMA	799
9730	2.2 64 320	2 8400M GS	1000

If you take 2713, 2718, 6670 and 9723, they look all the same. What are the other differences if any?

Maybe somebody can tell me what is the difference instead between the Series themselves? And I mean the these: 2600, 2700, 6600, 6700, 9600 and 9700.

The only diff I found so far is that for the series 9600 and 9700, the keypad is included within the keyboard, so the laptop is larger.

Thanks in advance to anybody that will shed some light on this.

Here is the full table, for Turions only:

Model	Speed	Socket	HD	Mem	VideoCard	VideoRAM
2610	1.9	58	160	1	7150M UMA	287
2620	1.9	58	160	1	7150M UMA	559
2622	1.9	58	200	1	7150M UMA	559
2710	2	60	160	2	7150M UMA	799
2713	2.2	64	250	2	7150M UMA	799
2724	1.9	58	250	2	7150M UMA	799
2728	2.2	64	250	2	7150M UMA	799
6603	2.2	64	160	2	7150M UMA	559
6618	1.9	58	250	2	7150M UMA	559
6622	1.9	58	160	2	7150M UMA	559
6625	1.9	58	160	1	7150M UMA	287
6627	1.9	58	160	2	7150M UMA	559
6645	2	60	160	2	7150M UMA	559
6670	2.2	64	250	2	7150M UMA	559
6718	1.9	58	160	2	7150M UMA	799
6725	2	60	160	2	7150M UMA	799
6746	2	60	160	2	8400M GS	1000
9610	1.9	58	160	1	7150M UMA	287
9618	1.9	58	240	2	7150M UMA	559
9623	2	60	240	2	7150M UMA	559
9625	2	60	240	2	7150M UMA	559
9635	2.2	64	240	2	7150M UMA	559
9718	1.9	58	250	2	7150M UMA	799
9720	2	60	280	2	7150M UMA	799
9723	2.2	64	250	2	7150M UMA	799
9726	2	60	250	2	7150M UMA	799
9730	2.2	64	320	2	8400M GS	1000
