With regards to open devices, I don't follow. Ever since AT&T went to GSM you could pretty much use any GSM phone that you could get your hands on with them, provided it supported US GSM bands.

I suppose you can also do the same thing with T-Mobile, provided the phone is not magenta.

LTE billed by the byte is very likely. Still think they'll fight tooth and nail against being wireless dumb pipes for as long as is possible....

I think Verizon is going to have to follow ATT when LTE becomes the norm. Since GSM (means EDGE, UMTS, LTE) allows just about any phone to work on a gsm/umts system. Verizon will not have an option. When 4G comes around in 2-4yrs. Its be open or loose customers.
