| Throattled. Which ISP I can switch to from teksavvy?
Hi I've been experiencing bandwidth throattle since a few days ago and let me tell you there's nothing more aggravating than paying to be aggravated.
I'd like to know if anyone knows a good isp offering similar features i.e. = or > 200Gb/month download cap, in Montreal QC.
Thank you. |

And I think Teksavvy's should do business with Vidéotron in order to diversify their market. |

Most cableco's Interconnect requirements are so high that the ISP's can't meet them without kissing a couple years operating profit goodbye. |

| reply to Unhappy customer Ah, now that the topic is in Canadian broadband, I can say the name of the ISP: Electronic Box Cable »electronicbox.net/index.php?p=cable |

Those are probably the least expensive choices. |

Thank you. Electronicbox resells videotron HS 7Mbps down 850k up from Videotron for 65$ with NO caps and NO throttling. It's also 5$ cheaper than what Videotron charges you for the same service.
Other then that, there is Look Wimax service at 3Mbps down and 640k up. It's also unlimited and NON throttled. It's roughly 65$ but it gets cheaper as you're forced to bundle it with their TV services so you get a rebate.
That's it in Montreal. I don't know whether Colba.net ADSL2+ 24mbps is affected by the throttling as they actually use their own DSLAMs. Can someone confirm ??? |

1 edit | reply to Quake110 LOL, it would probably be OK too Afterall, we still see posts about TSI in the Canadian Broadband even if we can read in the Canadian Broadband notes that TekSavvy posts now go here (»TekSavvy).

| Mr DiskAce, can you confirm that your cable service no longer has any Videotron caps ? When you initially set it up, if I remember well, you seemed quite miffed because you had caps imposed by Videotron.
How far inside Videotron do packets go before they take a different path to get to you ?
As I recall, there were 4 or 5 hops/routers before getting to some central place within Videotron.
Should Videotron implement throttling, isn't it likely that it would be done near the edges in order to distribute the load ?
From what I read of those ellacoya boxes, they are able to handled 1gbps of traffic "live". So I don't expect Videotron could buy a couplf of them to install centrally. So if deployed close to the end users, it would increase likelyhood that your traffic would also suffer the same fate. Can you comment on this ? |

| Good morning Mr. jfmezei_,
SpeedCable is totally unlimited for the end user. It is unthrottled too. Videotron control the HFC network from CMTS to uBR where traffic is rerouted using the MAC/SERIAL to a redundant interconnection with our core downtown Montreal.
I don't have all technical details regarding their infrastructure. Such information is generally undisclosed.
I can't really comment on the effect of a possible rollout of similar technology bell is about to put in service. It is a possibility we might have to deal with in the future with Quebec Cable operators too.
I hope Videotron is smart enough and use the wait-and-see approach. After all, part of teachers (OTPP) lost of revenue might go directly in the pocket of Videotron and it's wholesalers. Will see.
Best regards, DiskACE -- Electronic Box Inc. |

| As I understand it the throttling boxes typically go between the CMTS and uBR.
Cisco's pCube service engines as used by Rogers are very configurable and can throttle and measure usage by combinations of IP address, protocol etc.
It's my understanding that Rogers doesn't throttle 3web customers at this time even in areas where they throttle their own. So, there is technology capable, but nobody's using it yet! |
