| problem with broadband - 2 ISPs on one line?
Hi there,
Big problem with my Virgin brodband + 2 strange things happening. Anyone any ideas whats going on?
Some time ago I was foolish enough to migrate to Virgin. I was happy user of AOL but got lured by Virgin unlimited downloads.
I use Netgear router and it keeps loosing connection with Internet (not too often but often enough to be annoying). But the strange thing is how do I know about it - well, obviously I cannot surf the net but the ligths on the router are all correct as if I DID have the connection. So, during such thing happening I log to the router and on the router status screen it shows that there is no connection. After a while it connects again, though as I said no lights flashing on the router that would indicate it lost connection and is reconnecting.
The other very strange thing is that I always thought that there can only be one ISP on your phone line. So listen to this. I have switched from AOL to Virgin about 6 months ago. Now, 3 weeks ago I wend round with my Netgear router to my friend who had some problems with his AOL broadband. We plug in the router, set it up (user name, password and other things) and connected to Internet. After that, I went back home with my router, plug it in and
connected to the internet without changing anything in the set up the router still had my friends username and password for connecting with AOL! It took me 2 days before I realised that and change settings.
Now, should such a thing been impossible to happen? I mean my ISP supposed to be Virgin so how come I was able to connect suing AOLs username and password. And could this explain why I have problems with my Virgin broadband with no lights indication on my router?
I dont even bother to ring Virgin helpline the 0906 premium number for technical support and on top of that I dont think any of those script readers would be able to do more than tell me Now, switch off your computer, reboot your modem

More likely VM recognised the MAC address on the modem and didn't run any authentication checking with the username/pwrd.
If you feel you can replicate the symptom, try running a tracert to a web address - this will show the path you are taking and hence the ISP.
Given the scope of your concerns, I would recommend calling tech support.
This may assist you with the cost of that: »www.saynoto0870.com/search.php |

The chance of actually having someone on the other end of the line who really is a technical support are pretty slim. I had once dealt with AOL (in India they were as well) and I just do not want to repeat that experience. |
