My system is similar except, QX6600 @ 2.7, 8800GTX 768mB, and Vista 32.
I get around 20 FPS with all Very High and AA off, except during the Rock Falls in Awakening/Mine, when the FPS drops to near 10.
This is quite playable for an old guy like me. 
If you have installed the 1.2 patch, then make sure you are running in Fullscreen Mode each time you launch the game, there's a bug that reverts to Windowed Mode. 
Also, make sure you not running a background resource hog, use the What's Running program to check rather than Taskmanager.
