| Food HD & HGTV are now Stretchovision
A couple days ago Scripps changed these 2 channels from pure HD channels over to simulcasts of the SD channels with stretching. Bleh. They now only have a couple hours of HD/day now. We basically just lost 2 HD channels.

| I never once, in all the years that I had cable and D*, watched either channel until it was in GLORIOUS HD.....and these two channels had the best PQ out of all the channels in the HD lineup. I would turn it on simply because of the AWESOME PQ. Shows their stupidity, they just lost another viewer. No reason to watch it now....what a waste!!! They are still simulcasting a show that was recorded in HD so why not simply show it on the HD feed as well? Similar to what Discovery does...
The few people that complain kill it for the 98% who were satisfied with the way things were!!! |

you know,,,,like the old channel of 3 days ago.
sigh... |

| reply to Baff According to this link, it sounds like they are just showing the same programs on the HD channels as on the SD channels. It used to be separate programming. It doesn't mean it's going to be stretch-o-vision, it's still HD.

| reply to Baff I was getting tired of seeing the same 5 Good Eats episodes every week but I didn't want this. I noticed yesterday that they weren't on there regular rotation (Good Eats at 10 and Unwrapped at 10:30) This just sucks, the station looked so good before. |

| reply to kes601 Some shows are stretched, some aren't. Rachel Ray's show is definitely stretch. The panoramic stretch is particularly ugly when the camera moves, its like looking through a bubble as everything on the edge of the screen warps. Lifetime (LMN HD) also uses this same stretching method.
I agree with others, I often watched the channels just because the quality was so high even when I didn't care about the show that was on. Now I wouldn't care if Verizon dropped the channels to make room for just about anything else. |

I only had it on for a bit around 3:30 or so today and I don't know exactly who's show it was but it definitely looked like HD to me. |

| reply to Baff The shows that are filmed in HD are shown in HD.
Personally I hate the stretching, if they think viewer want it stretched then tell them to put on the SD channel and use their TVs zoom feature.
But while it sucks now, its probably going to be good in the long run, they will have more incentive to make more of their shows HD, besides in the last 4 moths we saw all of their content at least twice. I don't care how good PQ is, I cant watch the same episodes 3 times. |

| Mixed feelings here, I tend to lose the SD channels from my consciousness and never tune to shows I used to thoroughly enjoy. It seems like the only channels I know in the SD range are the kids shows, Speed and FSNY/MSG. I never remember any others.
I guess the real proof is to see how many shows that are recently created are in HD vs. SD, we'll see how serious they are about HD content. It struck me funny how the programming from the NY studios wasn't in HD for the most part, while the "remote / location" type shows are. I would have thought the opposite. |

The episodes that were previously shown in HD are still shown in HD.They have a mix of HD and stretch but still have the same amount of HD material (overall) then so be it. Yes, I agree that eventually all the shows will be in HD and this is the step back before going forward. |

| reply to Baff While I agree that it's sad to see stretched SD on Food HD, especially since I always thought that the PQ on Food HD was excellent, I can't agree that this is necessarily a bad move. Food HD was showing the same stuff over and over again. There's only so much of Mark Summers that I can take. Although the Food Network Challenges were cool in HD. They ended up repeating the same stuff over and over again.
I was stoked when we first got Food HD because I'm a big fan of Good Eats. I was disappointed when we first got it for two reasons - 1) they showed the same episodes like 40 times a week, and 2) they seemed to get the new episodes like 2 weeks after they showed on the SD channel.
Number 1 was an issue because I record every episode of GE, and it would have filled my DVR if I set up my series on the HD channel. And #2 would have bugged me because I'd have to wait to watch the new episodes.
So I kept my GE series on the SD version of the channel. Since this change, though, I switched it over to the HD version. Yeah the stretching is annoying, but I found the lack of content on the HD version of the channel to be equally annoying - to the point where I almost never watched the HD version, despite the outstanding PQ.
I hope, as someone mentioned, that this means that they're getting set to convert more of their stuff to HD. |
