problem opening my computer, my documents etc

I have had a problem opening up my files and folders recently and i fear it may be a virus of some sort. i have windows vista on my e machines t5224. i went into safe mode scanned using mcafee and adaware 2007 no viruses and i had a malware which i deleted. i restarted and i still have the same problem. i open up the folder it opens for split second then closes my icons disappear then reappear after a sec. is there anything i can do to fix this without reformatting?

Try doing a restore to a week earlier, and go back from there. I've had to do that a couple of times over the years w/ XP Pro.

Can you type Start+R ("Start" is the key on your keyboard with the Windows logo on it)? If so, you should be able to type

rstrui

into the Run box and launch it that way. (Start+R is the same as, say, Ctrl+R, except with the Start key rather than the Ctrl key)

Thats a fairly good indication the computer is infected and the infection starts-up when windows starts-up.

Depending on your experience......you could possibly disable the infection from staring by un-checking it in the "start-up" folder Start > run> type: msconfig

However, that would not clean any infection you MAY have.....therefore...suggestion......install free AVAST anti virus.....after updating it......do a "boot scan"....(that is done before windows starts) and possibly this will locate the infection......IF you are actually infected.

Doing anything else at this point would most likely be a waste of your time. imo

here is a link to avast:

now if you decide to give this a try.....be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN TO DISABLE ANY OTHER ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM YOU MAY HAVE INSTALLED ! !

otherwise there will be a conflict and your COMPUTER WILL/MAY crash. This is a "must-do" .

good luck....most likely I wont be posting again...but there are others who can offer you their assistence if you are in need.....when using avast.

Hmmmm....I'd take a guess that explorer.exe is crashing everytime you go to open those folders. I've had that happen to me but I don't think I ever found a solution. This was in XP mind you and the machine was not connected to an Internet connection.

ok heres the latest. i did a system restore to the last known good config which was from Tuesday ( the latest date possible) and i can now open up my files and folders however my anti virus mcafee said i wasn't fully protected but a quick update and restart fixed that problem. what i am concerned about is a pop up stating i may have malware or spyware on my computer and it wanted to install some program. it came from internet explorer. i clicked the x but it came up anyway. i wouldnt let it scan, so im thinking ill still try using that free anti virus and see what that can do.

That's a hijacker. You'll need to follow the steps here
»Security Cleanup FAQ »Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
and if you are still having a problem, Security Cleanup members will assist with manual removal if needed.

I wouldn't advise installing a second AV on top of your McAfee - use the online scanners in the steps provided to scan for viruses.

there is no information on those 2 files except that they are randomly named and were part of the install or whatever spyware/malware was on your comp.
