| DSL customer using AT&T "free" wifi hotspots
I remember reading that all of the 3Mb and up DSL customers could now connect to the AT&T hotspots for free. (I have 2 Elite lines) However I've tried 5 different locations now, and all were a bust. At each I found 2 SSIDs, of equal strength, one labeled ATTWIFI and the other the name of the place. (McDonalds, etc) Connecting to the store name SSID pulls up a credit card payment page, connecting to the AT&T SSID pulls a private IP - and obviously nothing more there.
Am I just missing something? Surely you don't have to run some sort of proprietary software to connect to these things......as that probably wouldn't work with my Nokia N810. -- Intel Quad Core QX6700 @3500Mhz/Asus P5N32-E SLI/4x 1024Mb Corsair/Seagate 750.10/PNY 7800GTs SLI/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler |

| I've had no problem logging into AT&T wireless sites and getting connected using my AT&T DSL id/password. I use both a Windows laptop and a Palm TX for this. No proprietary software needed, just a Web browser.
Basically, you connect, then you open your Web browser and try to access a page. Then you are redirected to the AT&T Login page and you pick your service and enter your ID and password and check the terms and conditions box. Then it logs you in and off you go. |

| I figured it would be something like that, but there is no web page to load when you are assigned a private IP. And it's not like it times out waiting on the DHCP, it pulls the private IP pretty quickly.
Maybe I just hit 5 bad locations. -- Intel Quad Core QX6700 @3500Mhz/Asus P5N32-E SLI/4x 1024Mb Corsair/Seagate 750.10/PNY 7800GTs SLI/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler |

| What do you mean by "private IP"? like 192.168.x.x or 10.1.x.x?
If so, that's pretty normal actually. It means they are doing NAT routing at the wireless facility. You should still be able to load a Web page.
If you can't, there's something else going on. Perhaps you have a software firewall that needs configuration? Or something wrong in your TCP/IP settings? |

| no, i mean a private 169 - cant even access the gateway ip. the same thing windows would auto assign itself if set to obtail from dhcp, but the dhcp doesnt hand out a valid ip. -- Intel Quad Core QX6700 @3500Mhz/Asus P5N32-E SLI/4x 1024Mb Corsair/Seagate 750.10/PNY 7800GTs SLI/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler |

| 169.x.x.x is not a private IP, it's an autoconfiguration IP. There is something wrong with your setup. DHCP is failing to deliver an IP address to you.
Windows will autoconfigure an IP for an adapter when it can't get an IP address for some reason. The only thing it's good for is local communication within your PC.
If I were you, I'd see if I can connect to other wireless hotspots, even just to get to the Web page that asks you to pay or log in. |

| reply to Camelot One Yup, just pick the att SSID, open the browser, type your normal broadband login and password and you are in business. If you use a 3rd party, non-MS, wifi client like Odyssey or similar you might need to add the att SSID manually. Your TCP/IP Properties should be set to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. |

I get free AT&T Wi-Fi Basic with AT&T High Speed Internet Pro or Elite, FastAccess® DSL Xtreme, Xtreme 6.0, or AT&T U-verse. How do I login? Use your primary High Speed Internet, DSL or AT&T U-verse username and password on the hotspot's webpage.
I've had no problems using mine when I have to. Maybe you're entering the info incorrectly? |

| I attempted to use this in a hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas recently, with no success. The wireless connection was marked as an AT&T Wireless site but each time I tried it came back and said that my information could not be verified. And I was using the exact same userid and password I use to connect my Pro DSL account at home.
I gave up and went for a massage instead. |

d_l Barsoom Premium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV | AT&T allows two concurrent connections (one DSL and one dial-up or wireless) per account, so you won't get bumped off. |

| I don't know that there is a universal format, but most of the places around here have time outs on the login. It cuts you off after so many minutes/hours. The easiest way to get back on is to reboot, reconnect, and login again. -- Intel Quad Core QX6700 @3500Mhz/Asus P5N32-E SLI/4x 1024Mb Corsair/Seagate 750.10/PNY 7800GTs SLI/Silverstone 850W/Custom water cooler |

| reply to Camelot One I have spent weeks on the same problem I make the connection then I am asked to log in with my DSL user name and password and I get can not authenticate. I have spent hours trying to resolve this with ATT and wifi tech support. the latest is that McDs should give me the info to log in with. Can you believe it, I give up. |
