A simple message I send to CTV this morning RE:Bell

Hey folks since I hadn't seen any reports on the current situation I decided to send the following to CTV. I haven't checked to see if Global has run any report on this yet but I would suggest informing other media outlets if possible.

Cheers,

Muzzy

===============================
Good morning,

I would like to bring to your attention recent event related to net-neutrality and Bell Canada's anti-competitive actions that are hurting small ISPs and customers (both Bell's and 3rd party ISPs alike). The CBC has already reported on this matter yet surprisingly CTV news has completely ignored this topic.

This issue has also been raised by Paul Crête, MP in parlement. I quote:
"Mr. Speaker, once again, the Minister of Industry is siding with telecommunications giants against consumers and is refusing to apply the principle of net neutrality, which guarantees identical upload or download speeds for anonymous blogs and big business websites alike. Real competition for sure."
"Can the minister make a commitment, here in this House, not to make any decisions that would favour big businesses at the expense of consumers, thus ensuring that the Internet remains a democratic tool?"

If you would like more information and in order to better understand the current situation, I higly recommend that you begin by reading some of the discussions on »TekSavvy.

You will realise that contrary to Bell's version of the situation, 3rd party ISPs are not Bell sympatico resellers and they procure and provide bandwidth indenpendently to the copper (physical telephone line) that they lease from bell. Therefore given the distinct segragation of traffic going through Sympatico vs most third party DSL service providers, the actions taken by Bell are discriminatory. Once again I highly recommend that you visit the above mentionned forum and to contact small ISPs such as Teksavvy Soultions (www.teksavvy.com) or electronicbox (www.electronicbox.net) to better understand the impact of these actions.

I do hope that the fact that this story has not been covered by CTV is simply by mistake and not because BCE is the parent company of CTV as this would put in question media neutrality as well as to put in question the trust that Canadians have put in CTV News.

Sincerely

edugas

You have to remember that CTV is owned by the same company that owns Bell

That is why OP mentioned this "I do hope that the fact that this story has not been covered by CTV is simply by mistake and not because BCE is the parent company of CTV as this would put in question media neutrality as well as to put in question the trust that Canadians have put in CTV News."

My mistake I saw that after I posted but hopefully it's an oversite but I think we both know why they have not talked about this

I've just sent a nice email to CTV, City and Global News detailing the issue and asking for more coverage.

I sent an email to CTV news a week ago and gave them the link to this site for further info. They are simply ignoring the issue and I believe it is because of their relationship with Bell. This is likely why the only news reports so far have been from the CBC, they're government funded.

I think if this continues and there is no reporting on CTV about this issue, then the next step will be to start a campaign against CTV reporting and out them as Canada's Least Trustworthy News

Once again, I remind you that Bell is NOT the parent company of CTV. Bell is a minority shareholder of CTVGlobeMedia. They own 15% of the company, and are the FOURTH largest shareholder, not the first largest.

How can it be "once again" that you remind me, since this is the first time you say it? Ok so BCE owns only 15%, none the less, one has to question whether the link between the two is the reason why they are not covering this news. Maybe I should send in an appology e-mail? I truely do not understand the need in your post for yelling "NOT" and "FOURTH".

My hope, just in case you missed it, was to poke them a little bit, since CTV probably has more of the viewer shares than CBC, so as to get them to publicise this problem even more.

Cheers and I hope that you're having a better day today.

I don't mean you as in Muzzy, I mean you as in "you all". People keep bringing this up over and over again, saying that Bell owns CTV. They don't. They're a minority shareholder. They might have a say, but they're not in control.

I used emphasis only because this same issue comes up repeatedly, and people are misrepresenting the situation.

Besides, I'd like to think that Lloyd has a bit more journalistic integrity than that.
